Perry McIntyre was named CAA Defensive Player-of-the-Week.

Despite a 5-3 record and losses to only a FBS team and two top-15 FCS teams, UMass barely registers on the latest FCS Coaches Poll. Delaware, with a 5-4 record and one of the wins against a DII team is #19.

UMass in high in the "others receiving votes" category in the TSN poll.

The Minutemen are 8th in the Lambert Cup poll (.pdf download).

Lets hope the UMASS defense can still pound away without the big #93 Byrne. I think he may have incurred a season ending injury at Richmond. Refs need to be more attentive to chop blocking which seems all too common at this level.

That would be a big loss for the UMass defense.

I was just looking at defensive statistics last night and thinking to myself how improved things are this year.

In 2010 Byrne had 13 TT 3.5 TFL and 0 sacks for the entire year.

In eight games this year, he has 26 TT, 1 TFL and 1 SACK.

In 2010 the defense had 12 sacks for 70 yards for the whole season.

In 2011, in eight games, the defense has 18 sacks for 117 yards.

Last year, 38-128 TFL for the whole year.

This year 48-202 TFL in eight games...
