He also has an article on the Atlantic 10 adopting the NCAA's new $2,000 stipend rule.
The stipend rule is good for the players, but in my view, it will further divide college sports into the "haves" and "have nots". BCS schools will have no problems funding the stipend for non-revenue sports, but most of the rest of the college sports universe may not. Most fans tend to fixate on football, basketball and hockey. UMass traditionally had success in women's softball and field hockey. Will we adopt the stipend rule or will we take a recruiting hit in those sports from schools with the ability to offer a recruit the stipend?

I watched the Temple-Ohio University football game last night. It was a pretty good game. Both teams had plenty of good athletes.

Don't the scholarships cover the full amount of attendance? What's with $2000 extra?

My row mate might think the glass remains half full again but I differ.
We again miss more makeable kicks in the Richmond game. Here is a suggestion - This spring the team should hold open tryouts for kickers. Soccer and Rugby players especially invited. If we cannot find a kicker ho canreach the end zone, A punter who can average at least 36 with good hang time and a FG/ pat specialist who can make 90%+ of his kicks then something is really wrong.
As for the scholarships and the $2000- well if you have not played a sport on scholarship you have no idea of the plusses and minuses. Yes it covers school and meals and all that but - and here is the big but - the team you are with pretty much owns you if you want to keep playing. Also scholarships are re-newed year to year and not everyone's is re-newed each year for a variety of reasons.
$2000- given as spending money over a year when you have to give so much in other time in meetings, of season training,m etc.
My row mate thinks we win easily but I am not so sure. From here on out I just want wins. If we do not win the last 3 then it is time for a staff change because we definitely have the team to win these last three games.
I'm looking for a great day tomorrow. I'm heading to the game with my 6 yr. old son. The weather is going to cooperate and the tailgate is going to be HUGE! McGuirk is a great place to tailgate and will be even better when (if?) a new/improved stadium is built. I really want to see us click on all cylinders tomorrow. Even if Pagel does not play we can still run Hernandez (love the way that kid runs). I would like to see BOTH TE's used alot. I want all the PAT's made (hopefully there are about 7 of them). Hopefully we get a crowd of about15,000. I know there will be many more than that outside the stadium. After the game, we are planning on hitting the hockey game against BC and then spending the night at the Campus Center Hotel. We'll get up for some breakfast and head home like gentlemen.
GO UMASS!!!!!
