Friday News----- July 30th, 2010

Tyler Holmes and Emil Igwenagu have been named UMass captains for the 2010 season. There have been a number of Junior captains for UMass in the past, but this is the first time I can remember where there were two. This is probably because UMass returns only nine starters (second lowest in the CAA) and only six, by my count, are seniors.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The CAA's website has the coach's and player's video from Media Day fixed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Delaware's Pat Devlin has reason to be motivated.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking of QB's, it looks like former Oregon player Jeremiah Masoli is going to be playing for Old Miss instead of an FCS team.

Key Quote:"Hopefully we've put in a good stead in terms with the court and the DA's office."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today is thirty-six days until the 2010 season starts. Wearing #36 for UMass is Tyler Holmes, a 6-0 215 pd RS JR LB from Blacksburg, VA. In 2009 Homes was the leading tackler on defense as he went 50 UT 60 AT 110 TT 6.5-14 TFL 1.0-9 SACKS 4-12 INT 5 BkUp 1 FF. Besides tackles, Holmes lead the team in INT's. Holmes was the second leading tackler in the CAA with 11 Avg/G. He has been named one of the UMass Captains for 2010.

Revised Summer Roster up

UMass has a revised 2010 roster up. It includes some additions to the roster and the 2010 recruits have been assigned numbers.

The revisions are probably not complete. Coach Morris mentioned JUCO QB Ian Shultis at the Friends of Football meeting Monday night. He also stated UMass will have FBS/I-A transfers from Temple and Syracuse and those do not yet appear on the roster. He also mentioned UMass might add further players later in the summer.

The one every one will be interested in is #3 Ian Shultis, 6-2 200 pd SO QB from Moorpark JUCO in CA.

His Scout.com page here. He broke Moorepark records in his freshman year. His 2009 YouTube highlights are here.

In HS, Schultis drew recruiting interest from Boston College, Harvard, Holy Cross, San Diego State, TCU, U Cal Davis and Utah.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also new on the roster is Raymond Pendagast, a 6-5 195 pd FR QB from Bridgeport CT. I've blogged about Pendagast twice before.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wearing #32 is Ryan Collins, a 6-0 180 pd FR DB from Walpole, MA.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Travis Poston, a 6-6 330 pd RS SO OL from Amber PA , actually transferred from Villanova last year and had to sit out 2009 because he was a laterial transfer. I have four previous blog posts about Poston.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As most of you remember, I'm an amateur astronomer. This image appeared on the Astronomy Picture-of-the-Day site on July 24th. It's by UMass astronomy Prof. Stephen Schneider. Wish I could have taken a course with him, but I missed it by a couple of decades.

Another source of UMie pride is the Astronomy Dept's 2MASS all-sky survey. I use the Two Micron sky images a lot in my astronomy work. The 2MASS survey is cited in a huge number of astronomical research papers.

I have another story about the 2MASS Sky Survey that has a UMass football connection. Somebody remind me of it when we're having a slow football news day.

The Sports Network has released their Buchanan Award Watch List for the best defensive player in FCS. IMHO, the list is a little strange. Three of the four are amoung the top 20 defensive players in the division?

The official CAA blogger has more details on the three plus LB Terrance Thomas of Villanova.
