UMass-JMU game Open Comment Thread

Today, I'll be here at UMass Football Blog Central Control watching the game (hopefully) on internet video.

College football quote for the day:

"At Georgia Southern, we don't cheat. That costs money and we don't have any" - Erk Russell, Georgia Southern

Ahem, Go UMass!!! Beat the Dukes!

UPDATE: I cannot get the CN8 video feed to work. I can get UNH-Rhode Island video from www.channellsurfing.net with Internet Explorer. The link shows the UMass-JMU game available at 3:45. There is no audio however..

What in the Hockey puck is Umass defense doing out there. They really miss those studs they had at linbacker last year. Tony nelson looks like the real deal and the O line is looking good.

Coach Brown needs to open it up with the spread offense. He recruited a qb out of South Florida I hope he doesnt try putting the guy at reciever. Teams will pin thier ears back and tee off on Coen. It's going to be a long year. Watch!

Last week I asked do they have (Holy Cross) have better athletes than we do. Our great defensive backfield is irrelevant if JMU can blow by our DL and our LB's can't tackle.

JMU started with 8 men in the box and we still can't pass. If they aren't going to pass we should put 8 men in the box also.

News Flash from Josh. True Freshman "Korrey Davis has solidified the #2 running back position". That's the first time I heard that.

This is painful. I am afraid the defense has a long way to go before we can have any playoff expectations. We have been unable to stop the run and the pass against inferior squads in the first two games and the step up in competition is really exposing ustoday.

Umass has been spoiled because they had superior athletes. Umass has not done the job in the recruiting war. These athletes look weak and afraid to hit.

Coach DUD you have a lot of DUD's at linebacker. Maybe Ceasar Rosario can come back. Let's see if you can coach these DUDS up.

Jeremy Horne loafed on the intercetion thrown by Liam and then he fell down. He made his qb look bad on this play. Fans deserve to see Championship type players and play after coming so close in Chatt. Tenn a couple of years ago.

Victor Cruz looks like a player that Coen can depend on. He is a player. Lets pray that they can keep him on the field this year.

Great play calling. Utilizing Coen's strength. The defense nees a gut check

Wow lets see how far Umass falls in the polls after JMU, Texas Tech & Delaware. It's time to call in the calvary. Call 911. Hand out pink slips.

Victor Cruz has the best hands I've seen on a receiver in a long time. He has all the tools. Runs great routes. Stops and go's on a dime. Great find for UMASS.

Where is the defense????????????

Anonymous said...

The defense graduated Charles Walker & Jason Hatchell. Everyone else is still there from last year. Those guys out there should be ready. They have no pride for what was built over the last 5 years. Garbage! This is a big let down. Liam needs help!

i agree with a previous post... the d look soft! why did't we put more guys in the box when all they did was run, run, run???
i think they tossed 4 passes all day, my god, what was brown looking at??? And when we closed to within 14 early in the 2nd half why did morris get so consertave in play/formation calling in their next posssesion when then went 3 and out losing 5 yards??????

First-rate offense can do little when they're "supported" by a second-rate defense. Speed on the corners, containing the outside, huge gaps in the middle? What the *&*@#%#@% is going on out there?

Many good posts. The bottom line is recruiting. We recruited very few (not zero) quality freshman. Historically we have depended on transfers. We didn't get any Great transfers this year to replace Hatchel and Walker.

No-one has to tell Coach Brown how to recruit. Lets see him recruit better players. If he needs to upgrade the facilities because athletes are choosing JMU and W&M and Delaware and App State because our stadium and fieldhouse don't measure up then they need to be upgraded.

If he needs more money to recruit he knows where the corner office is. If he isn’t getting money from the corner office then its time to use the telephone on his desk and tell someone else his problems so they can help him.

These items need immediate attention--SPECIAL TEAMS,jeremy Horne off kick returns-too tall, slow, hesitates.Sean Smalls, sorry not a punt returner.DEFENSE-our linebackers are slowww, can't tackle, can't contain due to lack of speed.I'm not sure what can be done about the LB's,but special team replacements are waiting.
Overall this team is good, with some adjustments on D,special teams we will be back.Biggest concern for sure is linebacker.Any one else have any thoughts. All I know is we were real bad in the 1st half, especially last two minutes, yet we still had a chance with 6 minutes to go,and D couldn't do it.

Change is the political buzz word and Change in college football is the key to getting better every year. This is a big let down after going to the big show three years ago. We demand a winner in AMHERST. We have to do whatever it takes to get the players to come to this program. How can a defensive genius but that $$**$$ on the field today. I'll fire that linebacker coach or better yet the players that he put out there. NO PRIDE TODAY. Jeremy CAIN JASON, HATCHELL, OKYE, CHARLES WALKER, Every linebacker that has played at UMASS should call these guys and RIP the &**^ and let them know that there is a Tradition and a TRUST and EQUITY that was left for these guys. If they care they will never let this happen again.

Amarni Edwards APP ST. I wonder if he would be playing these positions if he came to UMASS. This is a travesty. Mickey Andrews won the Big came 4 years ago and could have beat APP ST Last year if the runner did not fumble on the goal line. This coach is a disciple of the successful coaches at Florida, LSU, West Virginia. You need the same type of speed on offense at the QB position that you have at running back. Octavious get your degree son because your talent at QB is wasted at UMASS. Maybe Whipple's son is the answer?

(Quote from anonymous)
"This year it will be interesting to see how Octavious role increases as he tries to establish a different position so that he can get on the field. (at WR /TE" /H-Back or even LB / DB.)

Anonymous said...

When you have a father you have equity. Whipple has paved the way for his son to be the QB after Liam Coen leaves. Liam is a great qb and a throw back to the Dan Marino days. Those days are gone in college football. You need speed at that position. Somebody tell me that I am delusional. Many people are vested in UMASS winning a national championship not the conference. If the Athletic Department opens up the Kitty purse strings and let it rip then UMASS can become a Powerhouse. Tim Tebow is the GOLD STANDARD for QB's.

A very frustrating game to watch. The linebackers and secondary, special teams, returning punts and kickoffs, were terribly outplayed and disappointing. I've not seen such a lame performance from the LB corp and DEnds in years.

Anonymous said...

I will take a Dan Marino or Liam Coen on my team any day. Our weakness is not at QB. The D has been very lethargic so let's focus on where improvements need to be made, certainly not at QB. Thank God we have the type of QB who can get points on the board in these 'track meet' games!

Anonymous said...

I second what the last poster said. Coen is not the problem and anyone who thinks so must be changing the channel whenever the defense (i use that term loosely) is on the field.

Lets repeat a suggestion made 9 months ago and repeat on defense what we do on offense.

Coach Brown has spoken how he historically takes our most experienced OL and put him at C to anchor the line and provide leadership.

On defense we need to move our fastest and best DE to LB so that he can become a playmaker instead of someone who spends every down running around an OT trying to sack a QB who never passes.

No one has brought up play calling this year. 1st half the passing game was east to west. 2nd half north to south. Liam has lots of problems passing to the flats. If they are going to the flat, make the pass to the 1st down marker. Not 2 yds short.
Defense needs more heart. D-line is fine, LB's not playing with heart. Also some heart is missing in the secondary. We need more then 99% effort. We're to easily watching the plays go by us.
