Matty V. reports UMass hopes to keep it going against Buffalo. Matty notes that UMass will be able to start their preferred OL consisting of:

Hopefully, that will allow UMass to run the ball better. The Minutemen only averaged 1.8 yards/carry against Akron and suffered 6 TFL. Buffalo definitively has a better defense than the Zips.

Buffalo is third in total defense and seventh in scoring defense in the MAC.

The Columbus Dispatch says the new bowl scheme puts the MAC in the mix.

Bowling Green and Kents State meet for all the marbles in the MAC East.

The new bowl slate puts the Big East in roughly the same status as the MAC. (fixed link)

In a small way the bowl realignment makes the MAC slightly more relevant and on a peer with the Big East. MAC teams have to be more successfull over all but this move should help on the money and recruiting side. My major complaint about joining the MAC was always based on relevance, but the playing field is a little more level now.

In my view, eventually FBS will move to a full playoff system like all the other divisions. Simply fold the top bowls into the playoff field. Minor bowls will get the non-playoff teams.

The TV package for a full NCAA FBS playoff will be HUGE. We're talking NFL-level numbers. That will be a big boost for the "Mid-Majors", because 10% of many $$$ is many $$$.
