Wednesday--April 20, 2011

Lots of articles on UMass' move to FBS. Most of them are short on details, so don't be surprised if accounts differ. We'll know more later today.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Boston Globe says UMass lobbied hard to get into the Big East.

The Boston Herald says UMass plans to upgrade McGuirk.

MassLive.com says UMass will begin the transition by playing a mix of FBS and FCS teams in 2012.

Matty V. probably has the most details on the move. UMass would play a full MAC slate in 2012. He says UMass would not cut any men's sports or add any women's teams because of the move. The increase in women's scholarships would probably be absorbed by restoring rides in women's tennis, track, rowing and lacrosse.

Matty has some more details on the MAC and notes UMass is a good demographic match for the current teams.

He also talk about the challenges inherent in the move.

Meanwhile, in Michigan, they're saying adding UMass makes sense.

The official MAC media alert. Note in the comments some MAC fans are already interested in visiting Gillette.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Again, I would like to advise not to get too worked up over details. This is just the start of UMass' journey. We need to make this work for any later long term goals to happen.

Looks like we'll have a lot to talk about over the next couple of years. Enjoy the ride!

does Morris have a 3 or 5 year deal at umass? Who is the other coach who was let go? Also are we playoff eligible next year, I don't see why we wouldn't be because we didn't add extra scholarships yet.

We should be playoff eligible. Other teams like marshall were before they made the jump.

Renovations to McGuirk are long overdue. There is plenty of room to make the stadium a terrific on-campus venue, and the arrangements with the Krafts makes great sense. For two years, the team can enjoy the benefits of playing in Gilette while cultivating a strong following among the alumni and especially the students, most of whom have been less than supportive. Yea, it's a long ride to Gilette, but the pieces are now in place to create a substantial football program. I love the idea of occasionally scehduling teams like Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, LSU.... Plus, Connecticut, Rutgers, Syracuse, BC, Army, and Pittsburgh are all within proximity.

No matter how you look at it, playing in Gillette is a horrible idea. With all UMass goes through with those idiots in emass, now the athletic department is moving the games there. Stupid. Nevermind the ridiculous distance, there is no reason to have to move. McGuirk is big enough to meet any requirements now. Other schools (JMU/AppSt) found it possible to upgrade while still playing at their stadiums.

From a UMass Fan

rumor is Coach Wood was let go and Assistant OLine coach Tyler Moody has gone to Stonehill. I've heard Falbo as been replaced by a coach who coached at Temple. Wood and Moody have not been replaced yet. I hope Kyle excelled in his workout with the 49ers and wish him the best of luck. If we have a QB step up and play like Kyle did last year, I think we could be a great team.

So happy to hear about the planned expansion of McGuirk. Overall, a great deal for UMass Football and the University!

I've been reserved on this decision bnut embrace it fully now that it's done. Does my check go to Friends of Umass Football or The 100 Yard Club? Hope all of you follow my lead.

Everyone upset about the Gillette move should realize this is a temporary movement. McGuirk is unsuitable and an embarrassment for Division 1 football. Since everyone has these Big East aspirations, to eventually get there we need a new stadium. While at Gillette McGuirk will be renovated into a respectable Division 1 stadium which our fans will soon love in a couple years. Gillette is a great move for 2-5 years and I think our attendance will definitely go up.

where is the idiot that reported on 4-14 that Kraft was not going to cooperate because of pressure from BC. Must be the same guy that was promising all those announcements all winter long, that never happened. I guess he's not as much in the loop as he thinks he is.

Ok so let's look at what's happen here. Falbo whose been at the school for 7 years decides he will take a d 3 job at rpi. We lose 2 more coaches today, dudzinski left already. I think its safe to say Morris and crew will be let go after the season. Umass needs a splash to get fan support and should look to mike leach or an upper level coach to draw interest.

Morris will have one but not more than two years to elevate the program to a status worthy of an entering FBS team. If the team drops too many games I would assume that his time will be limited. After all, as an OC Brown is available as is Whipple in his role as QBC for the Browns. I'm guessing that either man (or both?) would love a chance to make history at the school and lead the ranks once again.

the coaches have been gone for awhile. and with coach moody he was the a grad assistant that had very little chance of being brought on full time. so he took a job offer that actually paid when he was able to get one

I don't think renovating McGuirk is the way to go, even if they expand it to 20-25 thousand it will be way to small, no way will big time schools come to Umass with a 25 thousand seat stadium. It needs to be knocked down and built to hold at least 40+ if you want to draw big teams like Florida, Michigan etc... for OOC games

1aa doesn't have grad assistants get you're facts straight moody was a full time assistant o line coach
