Satueday sound offs 01/03/2009

UMass' 2008 FCS team Texas Tech was handled by Ole Miss in the Cotton bowl. The Rebels rang up over 500 yard of offense and the second highest point total in Cotton Bowl history.

UMass' 2009 FCs opponent Kansas State is losing its starting QB to the NFL draft.

This has been your Big 12 update.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matty Vautour has a "2008 Superlatives" article, which includes several quotes about UMass football. One of the best:

"Derek Kellogg Award/Graduating senior most likely to be heard from again: Liam Coen - I'll put the over/under at 15 years before Coen is the head coach of the UMass football team."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UMass was 15th in total football attendance in 2008 out of 117 FCS teams (pdf). We were 5th among the cold weather teams (not counting UNI and North Dakota State; they both have domes).

Liam is not smart enough to ever be a head coach. Maybe that's mean and uncalled for, but the kid does not have the makeup to be a head coach.

High school coach yes--college head coach, I doubt it.DK was an excellent student, who got better every year as a player.

I wish Coen the best in life, but I think the other poster might be on to something...

Where do you come off saying that? What do you know about how smart he is? He basically was a coach on the field and players on the team looked at his knowledge of the game as much as the coaches on the team. Do you know his gpa? Do you know he has been on Dean's list before? He played the game as if he were coaching it. What is the makeup of a head coach to you? Have you ever heard his interviews and how well he deals with the media? You guys just say things to say them. Have you ever spoken to him or sat down and talked football and life with him? Your opinions are based on no facts. But they are your opinions.

Happy New Year!

As we begin a New Year where would you like our program to go? I think we need to join the CAA as a full time member. Our athletic conference shouldn't be directed by our basketball program but what is best for all of our sports.

Sooooo because he is a Comm. major that means he cant be a college football head coach? Didnt know that had anything to do with his football iq and ability to teach the game to other ATHLETES. Because I am sure you are quite the athlete yourself and understand a lot about what goes into a winning program.

I just think its funny how much a kid puts his heart and time into a program and "fans" like you guys crap on him after something nice is said about him. Why not just keep your opinion to yourself? Way to support the players my man.

speaking from the point of view who is around the team 6 days a week during the season, liam is one of the most professional, knowledgable and committed people in the game. player or coach. so to all of the "haters" out there, he will be a very succesful head coach one day, comm major or not.
