UMass dominates Bryant 42-7

I liked the new uniform look. Click on the image and Blogger displays a larger view.

UMass Athletic Dept write-up here .

Bryant University Athletic Dept here .

The Boston Glove says UMass wore out Bryant .

The Worcester Telegram talks about Liam Coen's record setting day .

Jeff Thomas of the Springfield Republican says UMass aired it out .

The Springfield Republican talked about how UMass rocked on Band Day.

Matty Vautoru talks about Jeremy Horne's birthday party .

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matty states that UMass was without two starters OL Bob Getek had a suspension and Brandon Collier was out with an injury. Collier dressed for the game. They lost Sean Smalls and Tony Nelson to injuries.

Tony Nelson only had three carries. He looked OK to me on the sidelines. The same was not true of Sean Smalls who was on crutches. He did come out in the second half, but was not dressed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UMass put the subs in with ten minutes to go in the third quarter. The Minutemen played rotating quarterbacks for the rest of the game. Scott Woodward, Scott Wallace and Spencer Whipple all got at least one series.

One QB who did not play was Octavius Hawkins, who dropped a wide open swing pass right in front of the UMass bench.

None of the backup quarterbacks looked that good, but they were working with the second string offense and it was obvious some of those players had not had a lot of reps.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know it was Bryant and I know both sides were trying to get the game over with, but I was impressed with the second team UMass defense. They were flying around and were doing some crisp hitting. They looked excited to be playing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rain held off until the last three minutes of the game. the UMass band day was awesome as usual.

I'll be back later with a web album.

I think Wallace looked fine as he completed a nice 12 yard pass to Krevis on a play action pass and had his only other pass dropped by Davis. It's tough for the subs to impress when there are so many personel changes taking place while they are on the field.
I also believe Octavious is no longer considered a QB by the coaching staff. I expect he will continue to be a receiver. Hard to not play QB, miss out on meetings, etc. for an entire year and then return to QB position.

Then Hawkins should transfer; he's a natural QB.

How do you figure he's a natural QB?

Let's look at the facts re: our incumbent QB:
Wallace traveled as a true Frosh while Hawkins didn't.
This year they moved Hawkins to receiver.
Perhaps the coahing staff thinks Wallace is the better QB, even though he's a walk-on?
Watching him throw he looks to me like a 'natural' QB. Wallace has a very effortless and fluid throwing motion and seems very poised in the pocket.
I think he is our incumbent, regardless of the hype for Hawkins as a H.S. QB.
I think Hawkins will make a very good 'game breaker' type receiver, so why not use both talents??

because hawkins is a quarterback no one has seen octavious play Q since the spring game, and tell you the truth octavious shows much poised out of high school on his highlight on youtube go check it out!!! Octavious is the future Wallace is good but should backing up Octavious, i think Brown did a great job offering octavious and not Wallace sorry Wallace but hawkins should and will be the man

Whipple will take the starting job.

I've been promoting Octavious since I saw him look real good at Spring Game
I want to see him running the option Like my man JC Watts for the Sooners back in the day!!
The only good thing that comes out of Wendell is the Herbstock

He will not run the option, he is a damn good quarterback on his highlight he sits in the pocket and delivers passes, and when he gets out the pocket he is still very accurate, i hope Coach Brown does not mess up this kids future and let him transfer, this kid is the ticket to the national championship

Big difference from H.S. to Div I QB position. In H.S. a QB with athleticism will excel because he can run around, however, at Div I level they must understand the offense, read defenses, and operate within the system. Therefore, many athletic H.S. Qb's have a tough time making a successful transition to Div I QB.

ok do you know this kid well enough to say he cant comprehend something. If you ask the coaches they would all say he is very intelligent, in high school he called his own plays and stop with the run around thing, cuz i see terrell pryor and tim tebow running around for no reason and they are damn good. oh and two quarterbacks named armanti and rodney who are eating up the div 1 aa football give me a break. one thing hawkins can do that they cant though is pass point blank

are you all related to these QB's or something?

Anonymous said...

no i am not but i want Umass football to go far in the upcoming years and octavious is the way to go

awe shut up about this we have Liam now he's the right now National Championship baby

Cohen hasn't lived up to his billing this year. I doubt if he will even make the pros scout team and he sure as hell won't lead UMass to National Championship this year. What a joke.
