Saturday New --- 04/04/09

Woah!, A genuine 2009 UMass football article by Jeff Thomas on the opening of UMass Spring practice.

He reports that Warren Wilson and Ke'Mon Bailey have been moved to CB. With the apparent academic loss of Reshaude Goodwin, UMass is thin at that position. Corey Davis probably has a good shot at one corner and freshman Darren Thellen and Kumar Davis will be in the mix.

Lots of players are failing drug tests at the recent Pro Days including Boston College's potential first round draft pick B.J. Raji.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Joe Yukia New Hampshire chapter of the NFL foundation will honor 17 New Hampshire scholar-athletes including UMass recruit Christian Birt.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dave Coulson in his "Around FCS" column thinks that the Villanova football team as well as the Wildcat hoops team may make some noise in 2009.

Is It True Umass is struggling at the Corner Back Position ?

spring ball has started which means the new season has officially begun. umass athletic website needs to move on and post a new picture. Liam had his 4 year career now it's time to let others have some spotlight. no disrespect for Liam, but it's time to look ahead and not dwell in the past.

Gonnet should be given a chance to return kickoffs. Bailey will make a good corner.

Athletes failing a drug test the first time for steroids should be kicked off the team for a year from the date of discovery along with loss of scholarship for the same period. These cheaters generally take positions away from those following the law both in spirit and legally. BCS programs with a high number of drug users should be banned from Bowl Games or in the case of the FCS schools from "play-offs" and ten scholarships taken away for one year. This would put a stop to these cheaters and the schools or coaches who look the other way in these matters. I know of many young men who, because they refuse to take steroids, lose out to the cheaters and the coaches who turn a blind eye to what is happening to their program. Similiar punishments should be established for the use of "weed", "coke", and others illegal drugs. And, in all cases therapy should be required along with retesting on a consistent basis. I'll bet we won't be hearing much of this problem if this were to be done and enforced strictly.

Anonymous,u r right! But it will not happen. The NCAA excutives make too much $ from the schools that cheat the most. The coaches want to win. They need to win to keep there jobs. They are not interested in who is doing roids. The coaches are only in who is the better player. It does not matter how they got to be the better player. That is the truth of it all. I know because I was on a team where it was the thing to do. I keep my starting job and now I am paying the price. The coaches give a dam less as how I am doing now that I do not play anymore.

Why didn't Coach Morris bring any Transfers in? I think we are thin in our Secondary, and in the D-Line. You can have faith in all the young players, but when it comes down to it you need a couple of transfers. Some older players that want to come in and play. Doesn't look like it is going to be a good defensive year if Michael Hanson, Brandon Collier, Jeremy Miles, and Josh Jennings, do not Emerge.
