Very foggy this morning. Mrs Blog and I had a great time at the game last night and I'll say again---we were very close to winning.

Three CAA teams beat FBS/I-A teams this weekend! That's got to be a record by a FCS conference for one week wins over FBS teams.

Villanova beat Temple.

William & Mary crushed Virginia.

Richmond handled Duke.

Whoa! We could have won this one.

Well, first thing the UMass defense is back. We shut out a Big 12 team three of the four quarters and we flat out pushed them around in the second half.

The UMass defense got pressure on Coffman all night and sent him to the sidelines for one series.

If it were not for the last series in the first half (what was the coaching staff thinking?) we would have won 17-14.

The offense had some good things and some things to work on. Tony Nelson and the OL got stronger as the night went on.

The bad thing was we had a LOT of drops. Havens probably could have added five receptions with better concentration from the receivers.

Still, there were a lot of positives. Again, we could have won this thing.

Good luck with the rest of the season to K-State. I enjoyed talking to tons of friendly Wildcat fans.

We are staying over tomorrow and flying home Monday. I've got lots of images so I'll have an image gallaery to post when I get home.

And I'll have to check the contest e-mail folder to see who won the hat. I know a couple of people picked UMass to win, but I don't remember if anyone had the Wildcats by four.

BTW, it didn't take long for FCS to win one over FBS as Villanova beat Temple 27-24. That's the fifth straight year a CAA team has beaten a FBS/I-A team.

And Big Ten Team Indiana just bearly escaped EKU.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looks like a big crowd here in Manhattan. Mrs. Blog and I have already run into some UMass folks.

One day before Kansas State--09/04/09

UPDATE: Well, here we are in Manhattan. No problems except for a rental car with the touchiest brakes on the planet...

------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm off! Hey, I heard that! As usual, I'll try to work on the blog some while I'm traveling. I have a new netbook computer that I'm using for the first time. Haven't had time to test it much, but it seems to be detecting my neighbors wireless networks. If there are no updates after this, then you know I'll be back up Monday evening.

Comments need to stay moderated. In the past I've created an open thread for the game, but it's just not possible right now.

Guest Blog from Kansas State

Continuing a tradition that been ongoing for several years, today we have a guest blog from Kansas State Blogger "Jon". He runs the K-Sate Blog "Fathead Baby". I got to ask him five questions about Kansas State and Saturday's game.

1. Since football is a zero-sum game and teams like Oklahoma go 10-1 every year, some team necessarily has to be Iowa State. Do you think that K-State can consistently compete with the sharks of the Big Twelve?

I think they can, and they've done it before. From 1997-2000, the Wildcats won 11 games or more. The problem with replicating that success today is that the South teams have gotten a lot better. Bob Stoops and Mack Brown have turned Oklahoma and Texas into powerhouses. Oklahoma State is a threat now because of a big donations from T. Boone Pickens, and Texas Tech will always be tough with Mike Leach. Right now, the North really can't compete with the South. The last North champion was K-State in 2003. KU and Mizzou are both good examples of North teams that have been slowly building. However, neither can beat the top dogs in the South. Until they do, they really don't haven't built much of anything.

2. The Wildcat Athletic Dept sent me the DVD of Kansas State's break through win against North Texas to end the long losing streak (how long was it?). Tell us how it felt as a Wildcat fan to make the big turn around under Coach Snyder.

It was technically a 16-game losing streak, but they hadn't won in 30 games (They tied KU in 1987). I don't remember any of that game because I was only 4-years-old at the time. Since I was so young when Snyder took over, I obviously don't recall the futility of K-State. That's probably the greatest gift Snyder gave K-State: A generation of fans who didn't have to grow up knowing that they were the worst team in college football. Even though I don't remember the bad years, I do remember the slow growth of the program. They went from thinking up ticket schemes to fill the stadium for a conference game, to easily selling out against teams like Indiana State and Akron.

3. In New England, we like our college bands. Tell us about the Wildcat Marching band.

They're called "The Pride of Wildcat Land." One of K-State's best traditions, The Wabash, comes from its band. While the band plays "Wabash Cannonball," band members and the student section do this.

4. Tell us about the changes Coach Snyder has made with this year's team. Is this Coffman kid any good?

For starters, the 3-4 defense is gone. Instead they'll run a base defense with four linemen, two linebackers and five defensive backs to combat the spread offenses of the Big 12. Also, Snyder will probably look to drop several of the tough non-conference games former coach Ron Prince scheduled for the next few years. Snyder is a firm believer in building the team up before scheduling big-name opponents. As far as Carson Coffman goes, K-State fans have as much to learn about him as anyone else. He backed up future NFL quarterback Josh Freeman for three years and didn't take any meaningful snaps during that time. If nothing else, Coffman comes from a very good football family. His father Paul was an NFL tight end, his older brother Chase plays tight end for the Bengals and his younger brother Cameron might end up being a highly recruited quarterback for the class of 2011.

5. What can the Wildcats get out of Saturday's game? What's your prediction?

The two biggest failures of last year's team was unsound defense and poor play from the running back position. I just want to see the defense run to the ball carrier and make the tackle. No whiffs. As far as our running back, we've got a junior college recruit named Daniel Thomas who won the starting job after less than a month with the team, and I couldn't be happier. If he doesn't pan out, our running back situation could be as bad as last year. I'll be watching him closely as well. As far as UMASS goes, I'm interested to see how we stop your running back, Tony Nelson. If he's as good as you say, he might have a nice game against the Wildcats. K-State had one of the worst run defenses in the nation last year, despite playing in the pass-happy Big 12. Also, our defense is very small this year, making things easier on your offensive line.

Despite that interesting matchup, I think K-State should win uncomfortably, 48-17.

Thanks, and good luck with the rest of the season.

- Jon (Class of 2008)

Special Thanks to Jon for taking the time to visit with us!

UPDATE: Oops. One of Jon's words got changed somehow. He actually said "K-state should win uncomfortably". It's been corrected above.

Three days until the start of the 2009 Season

Bump. Just for fun, I'm giving away a "UMass Football Blog" ball cap to the person who e-mails me the closest guess to the score of the UMass-Kansas State game. My e-mail is available in the "About me" section of the blog. It's free and I'll pay the shipping. I'll erase everyone's e-mail after the contest. It's one of three in existence. Could be worth zillions as a collectible on E-bay.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas State picks their QB starter and it's Carson Coffman.

Also the K-State depth chart is finally up. One thing that jumps out is that the Wildcats will not out size us at most positions. For example, their starting LB corps consists of John Houlik 5-11 219, Alex Hrebec 5-11 238 and Troy Butler 6-1 200.

Kansas State is closing in on a sellout.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matty Vautour has an article about new UMass punter Caleb Violette (transfer from Virginia Tech) winning the battle to be a starter. In other news, Matty reports no UMass starters in yellow shirts yesterday!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over on CSN, Bruce Dowd goes from covering the CAA to covering the entire FCS division.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The CAA issues its first weekly football release of 2009 and has information about all the games being played on this weekend.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Defense may the the strength of the UNH Wildcats this year.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tomorrow I'll be running a "Guest Blog" from a Kansas State Blogger. It's good stuff.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the UMass depth chart the only new starter on the offense is Brandon Flanagan 6-2 300 OL who will apparently platoon with Brian Ostaszewski 6-5 300 at RG. Flanagan is a transfer from Buffalo and was very highly rated out of Wakefield HS. He has not had much PT so far in his college career, so it will be fun to see what he can do.

UMass Kicking game 2009

Click on the image and Blogger displays a larger view.

Senior Armando Cuko #31 will handle field goals and kickoffs.

RF Caleb Violette #94 has won the starting position for punting.

RSo. Travis Tripucka #85 has the LS job for the foreseeable future. BTW, Tripucka played in all 15 of the Lacrosse team's games last year.

Also in the image are Fr. punter # 41 Jeff Strait and Fr. punter/kicker #96 Brendon Levengood.

The Wildcats will have a lot of unknowns this year. With a new HC, new offensive and defensive coordinators, a totally new linebacker corps and two new DB's, UMass has the same feeling.

We're not the only FCS/I-AA team playing a Big-12 opponent this week. NDSU plays Iowa State this Thursday.

It's Havens

Click on the image and Blogger displays a larger view. Since the first post I worked on the image a little. I cropped the image down and did an auto levels. Think it works a little better.

The UMass athletic site has a sizable article on Coach Morris' announcement that Kyle Havens will be the starting QB at Kansas State.

The Springfield Republican has a story here.

Sunday updates:

The UMass website has a podcast of the press conference with both Coach Morris and Havens commenting on the selection (mp3).

Back on August 18th (Media Day), the Springfield Republican posted a video interview with Havens here.

Matty Vautour has a short article asking if Haven will have Todd Bankhead or Richard Lucero level of success.

Lucero had good success on the field. In 2000 he went 140/235 2065 .596 17 TD 16 INT 143.6 EFF (higher than either of Bankhead's EFF's). His 8.8 yards/attempt is still #3 in UMass single season records. Lucero's 17 TD's that year tied him for 8th in single season along with Todd Bankhead and Peil Pennington.

However, he got in Whipple's doghouse early and often by missing QB meetings and general poor discipline. By the time Lucero got into trouble with the Amherst police, he was already off the team.

Eight Days until the start of 2009 Football ---08/28/09

If you missed it, the 2009 College football season opened last night as FCS/I-AA team Indiana State played NAIA Quincy. The Sycamores lost in overtime 26-20. Right away that should be the upset of the season. Indiana State has only won four games in the last five years, so they have to have reduced scholarships and support. Still, they had 16 returning starters and transfers from Wyoming and Kentucky. An NAIA team beating a Div I team is unusual to say the least.

BTW, the Trees next game is against Louisville, who beat Kansas State last year.

Eleven Days to Kansas State --- 08/25/09

I forgot to mention that I have about 15 images from the UMass Media Day in a Picassa web album here. There's also a link in the sidebar under the "2009 UMass Images" heading.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UMass was ranked #18 the FCS Pre-season Coaches poll. The Minutemen also received one #1 vote.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You remember the on-going soap opera about the state of Delaware allowing sports betting (See the last item in this blog post). The proposed sports betting would include betting on College football games. The NCAA has threatened to ban all playoff games in the state of Delaware.

Yesterday the Third Circuit Court of Appeals absolutely blew the state of Delaware out of the water by ruling the State's plan was contrary to Federal Law and could not proceed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matt Vautour has an article on Chris Zardas. The Blog thinks Zardas, when all his body parts are working, is a heckofa player. Hope he stays healthy this year and makes an impact for the Minutemen.

Matt also says Jonathan Hernandez and Cedric Gonnet are likely to be the 2nd and third string TBs for UMass in 2009.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I watched the Jets-Ravens game last night. James Ihedigbo had an interception on a play that produced three different penalties. The refs ruled offsetting fouls, so James did not get credit for the INT. The game stats listed Matt Lawrence as having one carry, but I must have missed it.

Twelve Days until Kansas State-- 08/24/09

The Springfield Republican has an article on Bob McLaughlin following in his father's footsteps.

BTW, in 1978 Joe McLaughlin led the Minutemen with 76 UT 66 AT 142 TT. Bob, playing as a sophomore down lineman in 2008 had 13 UT 7 AT 20 TT 0.5-2 sacks 1-2 TFL.

TRIVIA Contest: Joe led the Minutemen in tackles in 1978. Jeromy Miles led the 2008 UMass team with 104 TT.

Question: over those past 30 years, how many leading tacklers WERE NOT linebackers? Answer at the end of this blog post.

Bump. I'm giving away a very nice Maroon & White "UMass Football Blog" ball cap to the person who e-mails me the closest guess of the UMass Kansas State game. It's free and I'll pay the shipping. The contest is just for fun (I have an extra hat). I'll delete all the e-mail addresses after the game. Participation has been light so far. A decent guess has a good chance of winning.

Sixteen Days until Kansas State --- 08/20/09

Click on the image and Blogger displays a larger view.

Last year's frozen game with Hofstra at McGuirk was a battle not just for the win, but for the title of senior class with most wins. The UMass 2008 seniors ended up going 37-14, taking over the title from the 2006's senior class' total of 36 wins.

I would point out that the 2009 seniors have a reasonable chance to beat the record. Their total wins so far:
  • 2006 13-2

That's a total of 30-10. The 2009 UMass seniors could win the title of most wins for a senior class by going 8-3 or better this year. Incidentally, 8-3 would probably be a lock for the playoffs, making 2009 even more of a success. The probable loss at Kansas State means the Minutemen would have to achieve 8-2 against the rest of the schedule.
