Recruiting 2009 --Ryan & Woody Carter

Bedford High standout WR/DB Ryan Carter is interested in UMass. Article from the Bedford Minuteman (good name for a newspaper!) is here .

Ryan is quoted as saying his brother Woody Carter, a WR for Northeastern is interested in transferring to UMass.

Woodrow Carter played for NU in 2007. In 2008 it looks like he played at Dean.

I posted yesterday about Pat Devlin PSU QB transferring. Not looking good for umass. Schools of interest Delaware, JMU, and Villanova.

According to who? Devlin didn't mention any of those schools. It's just speculation that he's interested in those 3.

This concerns me, not that we might lose this person, but what his reason is. We shouldn't have a problem competing with other CAA schools, in fact we should be a more desirable option for them. Re: our facilities, We know we are slipping behind most if not all of the CAA-South schools and need to upgrade our facilities if we want to compete in the CAA.

Would Brown spend a scholarship on a transfer QB with all the backup qb's we have?

I hope so. Especially if Coach Brown thinks he has the skill to come here and start. We spend a lot of scholarships on kids for Dean Junior College and other JCs who come here and never perform on the field. (see last year.) A kid from a IA program who was highly rated coming out of high school and has some experience at the IA level would certainly be more likely to succeed at the IAA level. (eg Spencer Whipple who we expect to win the starting QB job). I expect an experienced QB is well worth a scholarship. Also with the addition of a couple of QB's it is expected some will transfer out to get playing time at another school.

Whipple to be next years starting QB?? I think the starter will definitely be winner of Wallace/Woodward competition as they shared time as backup QB in games this year. I look for Wallace to win the job since he has 3 years eligibility vs. Woodward only 1 year. Whipple does not have speed, strength, or arm strenght to be a starting QB. His dad may have coached here, but that doesn't make his son the starter next year.

Then why was Spencer Whipple given a football scholarship to come here? He could have chosen another school where he would expect to be the starter. I hope he wasn't given a scholarship as a favor to his father.
Wallace, Hopkins, and Whipple will all be RS-SO next fall. Woodward will be a RS-SR. I can't wait for the fall to see what happens.

For the record, Whipple was not given a scholarship to transfer.

What about Octavious Hawkins? He was a big name at QB coming out of H.S. to UMass. Everyone seemed really high on him when we signed him. Why isn't he being mentioned in the competition for starting QB? How does he project? Is he really that big of a dissapointment?
