Tuesday--August 26th, 2014

I don't know about you guys, but I'm starting to get excited---and nervous. I want to see UMass do well.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two articles on the Minutemen's first official two deep: Dan Malone and Matty Vautour.

I'd take the two-deep with several grains of salt. I doubt UMass would break true freshman J. T. Blyden's redshirt just to return kicks. Ryan Johnson, Jean Sifrin and Shane Huber could start later in the season.

QB- Blake Frohnaple, A.J. Doyle

Austin Whipple would be the 3rd QB

RB- Jamal Wilson, Lorenzo Woodley
FB-Rodney Mills, Daquan Mack

Mills at 6-1 215 would likely be another receiver out of the backfield

WR- Tajae Sharpe, Shakur Nesmith
WR -Jalen Williams, Alex Kenney

Marken Michel will also see a lot of snaps

TE: Brandon Howard, Jon Denton

LT-Tyrell Smith, Tyshon Henderson
LG-Fabian Hoeller, Michael Boland
C-Matt Sparks, Rich Queen
RG-Josh Bruns, Lucas Kolter
RT-Elijah Wilkinson, Cameron Mock

Hoeller would probably backup Sparks. Henderson will probably back up both tackle spots.

Defense

DE-Peter Angeh, Enock Asante
NT-Robert Kitching, Daniel Maynes
DT -Sha-Ki Holines, Leo Krizanovic

OLB -Kessan Messiah, Lucas Amato
ILB-Stanley Andre, John Robinson Woodgett
ILB-Jovan Santos-Knox, Steve Casali
OLB-Trey Seals, DaSean Downey

Along with WR's, this is a deep unit.

CB-Randall Jette, Iric Harris
S-Joe Colton, Khary Bailey-Smith
S-Trey Dudley-Giles, Zeke Edmonds
CB-Jackson Porter, Jesse Monteiro

Monteiro would probably be the nickle back. Edmonds, a true freshman, has had a good camp.

Special Teams

K-Blake Lucas, Matthew Wylie
P-Brian McDonald, Logan Laurent
LS-Nick Berus, Emmett Odegard
H-Blake Frohnapfel
KR-Trey Dudley-Giles, J.T. Blyden
PR-Trey Dudley-Giles, Bernard Davis

Five freshmen in the two-deep. Seventeen new starters.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Matty Vautour also has 2014 may be the most important season in UMass history. Just remember opening with four BCS teams does not really measure the progress UMass has made.

Thursday--September 18th, 2014

Dan Malone says Trey Dudley-Giles continues to impress on special teams. Trey has gone 7-248 35.4 AVE 77 LONG. If he keeps up this pace, Trey will shatter Dennis Dent's 1978 single season average of 28.31.

Alex Kenney and Austin Whipple return to Penn State.

Matthew Wylie is ready to kick if called on.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Matty Vautour says connections run deep between UMass and Penn State.

He also reports on if Christian Hackenberg will join a list of UMass opposing players to star in the NFL.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The UMass Daily Collegian says Minutemen kicking is still undecided.

The Collegian says UMass is in for a challenge.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Trey Dudley-Giles isn't the only UMass player doing well. Jovan Santos-Knox is leading the nation in tackles. Through 3 games he has 42 total tackles. A projected 186 TT over 12 games would blow away the UMass single season record of 140.5 bay Kole Ayi in 1998. Joe Colton's 34 tackles would place him third in Minutemen single season TT's. He'd be .5 TT behind Khari Samuel's 136.5 in 1998.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

FYI, Blake Frohnapfel, through three games has 117.8 EFF 619 yards and a 206.3 yards/game. Last year A.J. Doyle and Mike Wegzyn had EFF ratings of 99.1 and 94.6 respectively. Doyle averaged 115.8 yards per game and Wegzyn 60.3.

Tuesday--June 3rd, 2014

Dan Malone reports Phil Steele has four Minutemen on his preseason All-MAC teams.

Trey Dudley-Giles was named 1st team kick returner and 3rd team punt returner. In 2013 Dudley-Giles went 12-147 12.2 AVE 30 LONG in punt returns. For kick returns he totaled 30-669 22.3 AVE 41 LONG.

Dudley-Giles tied for 3rd in the MAC in kick return average.

Tajae Sharpe was named 3rd team as a wide receiver. Sharpe was 9th in the MAC in receptions per game. His totals were 61-680 4TD's 38 LONG 56.7 YARDS/Game 5.1 REC/GAME.

Randall Jette was named 3rd team at cornerback. Jette was 6th in the MAC in passes defended with 11 BKUP and 1 INT. He was also 9th in the league in FF and 3rd in fumbles recovered.

Stanley Andre was named to the 4th team All-Preseason at LB. Andre tied for 6th in the MAC with 42 UT 69 AT 111 TT 9.2 AVE/G and 1 INT.

Wednesday--July 29th, 2015

MAC Media Day is today from 1-3 on ESPN 3

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Dan Malone continues his unit 2015 previews and says the defensive secondary must live up to its experience.

The defensive backs, like the wide receiver corps is a senior-heavy group. They've been through the fire of the Molnar years and their experience should pay off in 2015.

The starting corners should be Randall Jette and Trey Dudley Giles. Jette has 34 career starts and Trey Dudley-Giles 27. Joe Colton and Khary Bailey-Smith have 22 and 23 starts respectively.

In the key reserves Jackson Porter has 8 starts. Jesse Monteiro has 12 GP. Kelton Brackett is the UAB transfer. Charan Singh is a RSFR.

UMass fans will be looking at an all-new secondary for 2016, but this year should be best since we went FBS.

Saturday--April 26th, 2014

Dan Malone has five questions with Trey Dudley-Giles. In the two years we've been in FBS, the one unit that's been competitive both years has been the defensive backfield.

At the spring game, the "ones" were (2013 stats):

  • Randall Jette RSO 11 starts 45 TT 2 TFL 1 INT 11 BU 12 PD
  • D'Metrius Williams SO 2 starts 29 TT 1 TFL 2 BU 2 PD
  • Joey Colton SO 9 starts 65 TT 2 TFL 11 BU 12 PD (also 9 kick returns for 175 total yards)
  • Trey Dudley-Giles SO 9 starts 42 TT 1.5 TFL 3 BU 2 PD (also led team in punt returns and kick returns 147 punt 669 kick return 816 total returns)

Sunday--September 1, 2013

You know your expectations have changed when you're disappointed you didn't hold Wisconsin to 17 points :)

As expected, the Badgers had a lot more speed and talent than the Minutemen. On the other hand, UMass' opener was a lot better than 3 total first downs against UConn and the 42 points Michigan scored in the first half.

Positives from the game:

Stacey Bedell. He fumbled in his first series, but after that he went 19-70 with 0 carries for  loss. He ran with his head up and made yardage after contact.

The offensive line. The stunting 3-4 Wisconsin defense was a tough test for the new starters, but they looked like a coherent unit, something that rarely happened in 2012. The offensive line's performance looked like a good place to build off of.

Trey-Dudley Giles. He went 6-144 24 AVE on kick returns. Giles looked fast and had good field awareness.

Devon Brown. Led the defense with 9 TT and had an INT.

Experience. Coach Molnar started substituting in the third quarter and the UMass second teamers got about 20 minutes of valuable playing time.

The defensive backfield. The Minutemen defenders had to do a lot of run support. The coverage was pretty good. When the UMass corners got beat, they got beat physically. There was not a lot of blown coverage  They were just covering All-America receivers...

Negative:

Penalties. The good start by the O-line would have been even better if it were not for a number of false starts.

Mike Wegzyn. He again threw into traffic multiple times. We can't tell if he threw to the wrong spot or the receivers ran the wrong route, but Wegzyn's throws hit the turf a number of times with no UMass player near the area. His overall throwing did not look sharp. In Mike's defense, Wisconsin could have had something to do with it.

Colter Johnson. Inexplicably, our All-MAC punter shanked a couple of punts.

The D-line. The huge Badger O-line was going to be a challenge , but the Wisconsin pulling guard collapsed the UMass defensive line all game.

Anyway, game is over and UMass will not see another team as good as the Badgers in 2013.

Thursday--October 24, 2013

In our 1 1/2 years in FBS UMass has taken its lumps so far. Saturday, we get our first chance to return some favors. Western Michigan put it on us last year 52-14 . This year, the winless Broncos visit Gillette. The Minutemen generally play pretty decent at home. Let's win the game and guarantee a better record for our second year. It's Homecoming and I'm hoping for a good Alumni turnout. The weather looks promising so far. Cooler, but clear. I for one, could use a little payback.

Good Morning from Jaffrey! Mrs Blog and are home safe after 31 hours of travel time from the cruise ship to New Hampshire. All is well and we had no major hassles.

We did a lot better than the passengers from this ship. Mrs Blog and I spoke with a guy from Australia who would be getting a refund, but no refund on his airline costs. The offer of a free cruise won't help him much as he will pay another round of air fares to take advantage of it.

Internet time from the Radiance of the Seas was 75 cents a minute! And it didn't like the Blogger interface. It cost me about $15 to write the header of the last post.

I missed the Blog, UMass news and you guys.

Tuesday--September 23rd 2014

One takeaway from the Penn State game is what a tremendous economic engine Nittany Lion football is for Pennsylvania. We were in a local grocery store the morning of the game and people were lined up buying sandwiches to go, grilling food, beer and every sort of tailgating stuff. And all were paying the PA sales tax. My room was nearly twice the cost of a non-football weekend room.

When pundits carp about the cost of UMass football remind them of the secondary gains to the state. We're not Penn State, but we could aspire to be 30% of it. Every politician in Massachusetts talks about jobs and the state economy, but nobody wants to actually help the engine that pays all the costs of the University and the salaries of every professor and administrator. Penn State football is BIG business, and the state of PA gets 6% of all the action (or 8% with a local surcharge), and that's not counting gas tax, local and state tax on rooms and on and on.

Matty Vautour comments on Penn State fever.

You had to be there to appreciate it.

The weather for Wednesday is supposedly cooler so dress warm. According to the poster, the UMMB will be there plus the UMass cheerleaders.

Hope to see a lot of UMass fans at the game.

In addition, I read somewhere on the UMass website, that 2014 schedule posters will be available.

The UMass website also has video of UMass DB Trey Dudley-Giles with a helmet-cam for one of last week's practices.
