Jeff Thomas on the Stadium Lights

Jeff Thomas of the Springfield Union on the Stadium lights.

This quote is a little unsettling "McCutcheon said there are no other facility upgrades in the works, but the improvement of Earl Lorden Field has been discussed and doing something with Boyden Gym is on the long-range radar."

Wha? I can think of a bunch of improvements that should be made. How about installing FieldTurf (a REAL lacrosse playing surface) at Garber Field and an AstroTurf surface/stadium for field hockey? Serious stadium upgrades, like a better sound system, bathrooms and concession facilities? Way better aquatic facilities? An indoor practice facility for football and lacrosse?

Yeah,I'd like a house in Hawaii and new Mercedez! Where do ya think the money is coming from? We have no rich alumni,so we have to do things a little at a time.Where have you been?

I agree. A little at at time is probably the most we can hope for. But I also think that if facilities are upgraded, more people will attend events. A new scoreboard and sound system is really important for the enjoyment of the experience of a game. I also think, however, that if major renovations or additions are in the works in the near future, then bathrooms and concessions may not make sense right now. It's frustrating knowing what could be, particularly with the enthusiasm of alumni and students alike. Consider what Mullins did for both basketball and hockey. Eventually, though, the University will have to do something with the stadium--as in major renovations or a build-out of the facility; new accoutrements such as a sound system and scoreboard (and the lighting) can always be salvaged for the future of what will eventually become a modern facility.

I am not sure what the football hater’s point is for even posting here. Don’t write that we have no money and no large donors. The truth is we do. The question is who has alienated the large donors, the medium donors, and the small donors. What did he do that they don’t want to give anything to the athletic department?

$500,000 - Note - that we, UMass, found in our pockets an extra $500,000 and offered it to our ex basketball coach if he would stay here.

$500,000 - I can't find the link, perhaps you can, McCutcheon found another $500,000 and applied it for increased scholarships. Which sports?

Its time to update the scholarship information:

This season, Washington-Grizzly stadium will get a new sound system, new field turf and 2,000 new seats.

And you'll still hear them complain about the lack of lights.
