Game Day--Buffalo November 27th, 2015

Yes!!!

From Matty Vautour:

My wet last tweet didn't go. UMass won 31-26. Lot of happy people outside UMass locker room

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Like everything else this year, today's game is going to be a tough row to hoe, Only two days of practice and the injury situation should make the Minutemen a fairly large underdog.

The 09/03/15 defensive backfield depth chart:

CB Randall Jette
SS Trey Dudley-Giles
FS Khary Bailey-Smith
CB Kelton Bracket

If Randall Jette is not available, today's starting defensive backfield could be:

CB DuVaughn Beckford
SS Jesse Monteiro
FS Joe Colton
CB James Oliphant

The Bulls have turned the ball over in recent games. If UMass can get some momentum, maybe we could get the upset. It would certainly be a morale booster to the team and us fans.

I'll be watching and rooting for the Minutemen.

Go UMass!!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE: Dan Malone has how to watch today's game.

With only one win over a team with a wining record, the Bulls may not be picked for a bowl anyway.

Tuesday--July 14th, 2015

Randall Jette has been named to the Jim Thorpe Award Watch list.

Matty Vautour has a post about Jette.

A lot more pre-season honors for the Minutemen this year. Last year Phil Steele had four UMass players on his All-MAC team. This year ten. The Minutemen had no national award watch list players pre-2014. This year Tajae Sharpe, Matt Sparks, Jovan Santos-Knox and Randall Jette have made national watch lists.

As long time blog readers know, I'm a life long amateur astronomer. Just about the time I'm wrapping up this post, the New Horizons spacecraft will be making it's closest approach to Pluto. I've got NASA TV playing in the background. If you're looking for a good summer read, try Percival's Planet, a fictionalized story of the discovery of the planet Pluto. When I went to the double star meeting last September at Lowell Observatory, I handled the controls to the telescope Clyde Tombaugh used to discover Pluto.

I am old enough to have been around during the start of the Space Age. it's sobering to realize that no one alive on this planet will ever witness another first time planetary fly-by.

Dudley-Giles tied for 3rd in the MAC in kick return average.

Wednesday--July 29th, 2015

MAC Media Day is today from 1-3 on ESPN 3

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Dan Malone continues his unit 2015 previews and says the defensive secondary must live up to its experience.

The defensive backs, like the wide receiver corps is a senior-heavy group. They've been through the fire of the Molnar years and their experience should pay off in 2015.

The starting corners should be Randall Jette and Trey Dudley Giles. Jette has 34 career starts and Trey Dudley-Giles 27. Joe Colton and Khary Bailey-Smith have 22 and 23 starts respectively.

In the key reserves Jackson Porter has 8 starts. Jesse Monteiro has 12 GP. Kelton Brackett is the UAB transfer. Charan Singh is a RSFR.

UMass fans will be looking at an all-new secondary for 2016, but this year should be best since we went FBS.

Thursday--September 10th, 2015

Dan Malone has scouting Colorado by the numbers.

The Buffs plan to pressure Frohnapfel.

Buffs WR Nelson Spruce and UMass CB Randall Jette will be a matchup to watch in Saturday's game at Boulder. Spruce went 8-69 0 TD 13 LONG against Hawaii. He was the Buffs leading receiver in that game.

I believe in Randall.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Blake Lucas is ready for a shot at redemption. I want all the kids to do well. I've said several times that it would be nice for A.J. Doyle to be able to make some plays. The same thing applies to Lucas. He's always had the leg. It would be great for him and UMass if he had a breakout season in his senior year.

As I mentioned yesterday the 2011 roster is up.

Deletions from the Spring roster

Additions to the Minutemen in 2011(including freshmen already on the Spring Roster as they now have offical numbers). According to articles 40% of the team is new from 2010. There are 100 players on the 2011 roster. There were 91 in 2010.
I miss anyone?

Watched Chris Koepplin kick off for the Pats last night. He hit one out of bounds, but boomed the remainder of his kicks deep into the endzone.

ProJo.com mentions Koepplin in their writeup of the game. Gostkowski looked good on his field goals, so Koepplin has to hope his film impresses some other team, or the Pats sign him to their practice roster as insurance.

Back in June SB nation published its College football entertainment index. MAC report online comments on the MAC's most entertaining team.

The old football saw "Offense sells the tickets" is probably true. Wining helps too :)

Improving the Minutemen's last-in-the-nation scoring offense is Coach Molnar's highest priority. He's an offensive guy. Last year could not have been any fun for him.

Coach Molnar seems to be able to make changes if needed. Last year, the UMass offensive line was probably the poorest performing/most out matched unit in our first year in FBS. This year we have a new O-line coach, a new offensive coordinator and Coach Molnar says he's going to let Coach Bond do most of the play calling.

Matthews is also NFL Draft Scout's #1 WR going into this season.
