Monday News ----- July 26th, 2010

The Brown University newspaper has a story on Liam Coen's joining the Brown staff. We all knew that Liam was going to be an excellent coach.

The Diamondback blog says this year is a big one for Don Brown.

Former UMass star Keron Williams is interviewed by Vancouver Sun. The article has several UMass references. Anton McKenzie is is also on the Lions roster.

As most of you remember, I'm an amateur astronomer. This image appeared on the Astronomy Picture-of-the-Day site on July 24th. It's by UMass astronomy Prof. Stephen Schneider. Wish I could have taken a course with him, but I missed it by a couple of decades.

Another source of UMie pride is the Astronomy Dept's 2MASS all-sky survey. I use the Two Micron sky images a lot in my astronomy work. The 2MASS survey is cited in a huge number of astronomical research papers.

I have another story about the 2MASS Sky Survey that has a UMass football connection. Somebody remind me of it when we're having a slow football news day.

Catching up on the player countdown. Yesterday was forty-one days to football. Wearing #41 for UMass this year is Jeff Strait, a 6-0 190 pd RS FR P from Manheim, PA. Strait was redshirted in 2009.

Today is forty days until the start of the season and wearing #40 for UMass is Scott Duggan, 5-11 225 pd RS SO LB from Hudson, MA. Duggan appeared in eight games and had 4 UT 4 AT 8 TT in 2009.
