Take an aerial tour of McGuirk stadium with a remote control drone.

Dan Malone says he's not sure if the NCAA bans drones during the game. It would be cool during the halftime show though. Maybe the UMMB could integrate the drone views with the marching. For example, a formation that would be best viewed from above.

On a more aggressive note, maybe the drone could buzz the opposing side's mascot :)

Thursday-- May 29th, 2014

I was down in Amherst yesterday on a cool and rainy day. I stopped by the UMass Football Performance center and took some images. Talked with the friendly construction workers.

The outside of both the Performance Center and the new press box is coming along well. The insides still have some work to go.

Click on the image and Blogger displays a larger view. I've set up a Picassa web album with about 15 images here.

The facing of the building is concrete board. Up close, it has a nice texture and weathers to a more attractive visual appearance than concrete  (so say the manufacturers).

Wish they had this stuff back when I was at UMass during the Era of Concrete Buildings. It would have avoided the Post Stalin-Chernobyl look some of those structures now have.

Recruiting 2015--- Diasjon Robinson verbals to UMass

Tim Farrell image
The Minutemen landed their first verbal for 2015 when Diasjon Robinson committed to UMass yesterday.

Robinson is a 6-2 275 pound DT from New Jersey.

I've blogged about Robinson before.

Dan Malone has the story here.

Robinson's 247Sports page here.

I've linked to this article in my previous blog post, but it features Robinson and has some of his stats from 2013.

UPDATE: Dan Malone starts the 2015 MassLive UMass recruiting database. Quote from the article:

"With the help of his coaching staff, he pieced together a fairly impressive batch of players for 2014 on short notice. Given a whole year, Whipple should be able to put his considerable recruiting connections to work even more successfully."

UPDATE II

NJ.com has an article on recruiting updates and comments on Robinson's verbal to the Minutemen. Partial quote from the article:

Robinson is a talented player along the interior who would likely have fielded more offers if he were an inch or so taller. He put forth a standout performance at Rivals Camp-New Jersey and dominated the point of attack for Lincoln the past two years both as an offensive guard and interior defender.

DT's are the rarest recruits. Looks like UMass has one with a big motor.

Thursday--may 15th, 2014

Matty V. reports UMass is in early-stage talks with the Sun Belt.

Dan Malone also has a story about the possible move to the Sun Belt. There are an number of media links about the same topic, but they are all repeating the same information.

Sports Illustrated says "Why Not?"

This is good news folks! UMass would join the Sun Belt as a football only member. Minuteman hoops could stay in Atlantic 10 and all the Olympic Sports could stay put also.

We badly need some conference to take us while Coach Whipple's reforms take hold. I've had two separate media professionals tell me that the Minutemen's dream conference, the AAC  is still a possibility in the future. You have to be astute enough to understand the AAC would not be publicly interested in a 2-22 team. If Whipple can get us to 8-4 or better, then we'd be interesting. UMass needs some breathing space for Whipple to get us there. The Sun Belt would allow us that time.

In addition, we already have a history with Georgia Southern and Appalachian State. In addition to that, we would have a presence in a talent rich area of the country.

Let's hope this comes true.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

ABC40 has a post on Anthony Dima signing a free agent contract with the Browns.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jesse Allen of Hustle Belt looks at UMass' defensive issues. The article doesn't cover the problems UMass' QB's caused for the defense. The Minutemen had 18 INTS for 395 yards and 5 TD's. Minusing out 35 points and the field position caused by the interceptions would have made the Minutemen defensive improvement even more striking.

So far Zanotto has visited Kent State, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and UMass. He will be returning to UMass and Pitt this summer, in addition to trips to Toledo, Maryland and Bowling Green.

“I’ll take some visits and see what other interest I get, and then I’d like to make my [college] decision by July or August before my senior year starts.”

Dan Malone looks at possible future NFL Draft candidates from UMass. Dan mentions Penn State transfer Alex Kenney. If Kenney has NFL dreams, he needs to have a monster year. Like Michael Cox, he arrives without a lot of miles on his body, so the potential is there.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

ESPN Boston says it was an unprecedented NFL Draft for Massachusetts natives.

Recruiting 2015--- Blake Browning

Scout.com image
Scout.com reports UMass is showing an interest in Blake Browning, a 6-1 285 pound OC/OG from Pflugerville, Texas.

Partial quote from a May 9th article from Scout.com.

"Right now, I really don't know where I will camp. The way it's playing out, there are a lot of schools that are coming out, like Kansas, UTEP, Vanderbilt, UMass. It really depends on how the spring plays out with offers and who shows serious interest. I'd love to have a short list by the end of the spring," he said.

He plays center for the Hawks, and Browning finds himself being recruited as an interior lineman at the next level."

Scout.com page here.

Hudl.com has some physical stats and video.

Browning holds an offer from Tulsa. Interest from a number of BCS schools.

Saturday--May 10th, 2014

Rob Blanchflower remains a possible option for the Steelers and the Patriots for Day Three of the NFL Draft.

Oops,  and the Eagles too.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kent State's Dri Archer went in the third round to the Steelers.  If you missed it. Archer ran a 4.26 in the NFL Combine, which was the second fastest time in Combine history. With all the money riding on these picks, no team is willing to take anyone else's word for statistics, so that's why there are twelve guys at the forty finish line all timing the same guy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

NFL.com's best remaining picks for Day Three. Still available is Boston College's Andre Williams.

The Eagles took Vanderbilt's Jordan Matthews.

"“Coach Whipple has been great. Every scout and NFL coach that has come in here speaks so highly of him and tells me what a great guy he is. He’s really helped me a lot,” Blanchflower said. “He has reached out to me. He loves UMass. He loves it here. He is so passionate about the university.”

More on Florida HS St. Thomas Aquinas pipeline to UMass: last Saturday I blogged about some St.Thomas Aquinas recruits from the first Whipple era.

More recently, Bill Nesselt graduated in 2013. He was redshirted in 2010 before winning All-CAA academic honors in 2011. Nesselt suffered a career-ending injury and worked as a student assistant to the UMass football team in 2012 and 2013. He taught and coached at St. Thomas Aquinas in the fall of 2013 and recently has been hired as linebacker coach at Ferrum College in Virginia. Congrats to Bill and hope he's starting a great career in coaching! Hopefully, he still has some connections with St.Thomas Aquinas and can put in a good word about UMass.

UMass Historical Scans---1990

I've added 14 scans of 1990 UMass game programs to the UMass Historical Scans section of the Blog.

In 1990, Coach Jim Reid led the Minutemen to their 17th Yankee Conference Championship. UMass went 8-2-1.

UMass opened with a tie against Holy Cross and broke a long home winning streak for the Crusaders. How tough a game was that? Minutemen RB Jerome Bledsoe broke his leg in the first half and then lied to the coaches that it wasn't broke so that he could stay on the sidelines to watch the second half.

UMass defeated Delaware for the first time on 10/20, but UMass QB Gary Wilkos fractured his neck and ended his promising QB career. Wilkos lay on the Delaware stadium turf for 45 minutes because all the ambulances had been called away.

Down to its fourth string QB, UMass lost to William & Mary (not yet in the Yankee Conference) 0-38 in the first round of the FCS playoffs.

Lots of famous names on the UMass roster in 1990: Paul Mayberry. Ron Villone.

UMass had one of its best ever OL with Rich Cavanaugh, Paul Mayberry, Jay Gabbe, Tony Giudice and Kai Dietiker.

On defense UMass had Mario Perry, Rich Kane and Don Caparotti.

If you want a rational for moving to FBS, read this article about UMass' budget cutbacks in 1990. UMass would not pay for a room at the Yankee Conference Media Day so Reid slept on the floor of Richmond Coach Ed Marshall's floor. The Minutemen were playing with three year old uniforms and the UMass coach staff couldn't afford matching shirts...

UMass should achieve a break-even financial status in FBS in a few years. Then the UMass Athletic Dept will hold its revenue stream in its own hands and days like 1990 will never happen again.
