Wednesday News---March 31st, 2010

A couple of Vladimir Ducasse articles: a Bleacher Report Denver Broncos mock draft here and a Kansas City Chiefs mock draft here.

A sports blogger for a New Orleans newspaper has Ducasse as one of his sleeper picks.

Former Richmond Coach Mike London's off campus practice for the Cavs went well.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JMU's Arthur Moats is visiting a number of Pro teams.

Now that UMass is starting spring practice, how about adding some plays from the Wildcat offense for Octavious Hawkins? He's a big strong kid and he would be threat to run and throw. Villanova used the occasional Wildcat formation to great effect in last year's National Championship game.

It would certainly add another thing to think about when UMass' opponents face our Pro Set Offense.

Off topic, but interesting, is Boston College's firing of Al Skinner. The Blog had a couple of classes with Skinner back in the day. You have to wonder what BC athletic director Gene DeFilippo wants in a coach. Skinner took the Eagles to eight post season sessions in thirteen years...

Matty Vautour adds some thoughts here.

Picucci is the most bland and unimaginative o coordinator umass has ever had. I highly doubt he will be installing a wildcat formation.

i understand the juniors had a pro day on friday of last week
any standouts

who is calling the plays now? someone rumored earlier that Morris was going to take back the playcalling. any truth to that?

The Wildcat is run by the Dolphins and the Dolphins only.

it seems like past practice, when a coach at bc interviews for another position he is gone. skinner had said he was looking at st johns.

the wildcat is run by about 70 college teams not named Umass. Would love to see us mix it up a little bit this year and not the same off tackle play everytime.

One thing I dont want to hear from the coaching staff this year is that we are young and rebuidling. the last two years we are a .500 program sadly. we must improve this year!

It still amazes me we had vlad who will be a 2nd to 3rd round draft pick, miles and zardas who are likley to get into a camp and loads of seniors who were very productive. yet we finished under 500 including some very embarrasing losses.

Skinner is off to greener pastures.

You can have talent at all other positions, but if you struggle at QB, you are lucky to be .500. Show me a winning team with 11 TD passes and 22 interceptions. I would like to say things will be different this year, but I don't see it.

The Wildcat is not the answer here. There is a reason that Hawkins hasn't played at QB.

There was not a good replacement for Coen on the roster, and Havens turned it over way too much. I do think he'll be better this season. I'm hoping the big QB recruit from NJ is a player, and we can see him start for 3-4 years.

Anonymous, I played for Picucci and he forgot more about the game of football than you think YOU know. Ask anyone that played for him...bland, #2 in league in offense in first year, pretty good. Turnovers, not good and yes they are responsible for that but to make that comment is ridiculous....and Morris is not calling plays.

Wildcat is when someone other than the Qb runs with ball idiots! If its QB, its just QB runs!!!

#2 offense??? they won 5 games. Alot of those yards were picked up when teams had the 2nd string defense in there. If you took out the garbage yards they were not a solid offense last year.

yes 2 on offense check your stats...and are you a Umass fan or alumn like myself? or just someone who likes to bash the program? grow up with the garbage yards comment and watch a game once in awhile

Uass said...

again yes , 2 in offense...do your research...and they were in every game last year except delaware(so starters comment false) ...if you are a true Umass fan or alumn, you would have some substance behind comments...but your not

OK, guys, I'm thinking of tightening moderation for a while. You may not be aware, but I'm still getting some really off-the-wall stuff that I reject. Most comments I've been letting go.

However, it seems as if there has been an increase in one-liner shots at the program or people (see the comment about Warren Wilson in Friday's post).

This type of stuff has zero information content and I have to waste my time dealing it and I assume the blog readers are not thrilled about wasting their time either.

If someone wants to start flame wars or bash the program a message board is the perfect venue. If you post here, try to add something to our knowledge of UMass Football.

I agrre with the moderator.......think and post positive about the program......lots of good things to talk about. rumor has it that Zardas is getting way more looks than you think....too bad we didnt get a chance to see more of him. I know he was hurt but the scouts sure seem to like him. Vlad got some people on the team some looks and I hope it works out for them. We had two players play in national all star games and with a little more luck this team could have gone deep. both key backs gone and the heart of the defense gone..lets hope for the best this year.
