UMass Football News--August 9th, 2017
Dick MacPherson has passed away. He was head coach at UMass from 1971 to 1979. His 73 games is third on the UMass all-time games coached list. He won five Yankee Conference championships and led UMass to the first FCS Championship.
The UMass administration promptly cut his scholarships the next year and he left for Syracuse where he became a Hall-of-Fame coach.
He was a great guy and boy could he tell football stories.

UMass Football History--Scans of the 1975 UMass Press Guide
I've added 9 scans of pages from the 1975 UMass press guide to the UMass History section of the Blog.
1975 was quite a year for Minutemen football. College Hall-of-Fame coach Dick MacPherson was head coach.
UMass finished 8-2: 4-1 in the Yankee Conference.
Ned Deane and Ed McAleney were Captains.
Four members of the 1975 team were First-Team All-Americans at some time in their careers. This was before FCS when there was only one division. In addition to Deane and McAleney, Ron Harris (1976) and Kevin Cummings (1977) went on to be First Team All-Americans.
Dave Croasdale CB, Ned Dean OG, Ron Harris S, Rich Jessamy RB, Gary Little DE, Ed McAleney DT, Brian McNally QB, Ross Schubarth OG and John Toner LB were First-Team All-Yankee Conference that year.

Captain’s Breakfast – 21 former captains attended.
Alumni Game - 33 Alums played in the game, over 100 attended.
Post-Game UMass Football Family Reunion – over 300 active players, alumni, coaches, staff and families attended.
-550+ Community Service Hours performed in the Spring Semester by UMass Football Players.
-Awarded CHAMPS Cup Community Service Category for leading all UMass Athletics team in community service hours.
-Bob Foote’s $500,000 contribution to the new Football Training Facility.
-11th Annual UMass Football Golf Classic had 92 golfers participate.
-UMass Football Experience, which was a string of summer camps held on campus and at Gillette Stadium for boys of all ages with over 500 participants.

The second MINUTEMAN UPDATE highlights Massachusetts
great, Phil Roland, ‘75 BS, ‘77 MS.
Phil played Runningback for Coach MacPherson from 1971 to 1974. After his playing days were over, he began his career as a football coach at UMass, first serving as a Graduate Assistant for the 1975 season and the Runningbacks Coach for the ‘76 season. After that, Phil moved on to the New England Patriots as a Quality Control Coach for the 1977 season, and his last stop was at Maine Central Institute as an Assistant in 1978. While at MCI, Phil was offered a job with Honeywell and it was then he began his business career. He stayed at Honeywell for 5 years before taking a job at ABB for another 5 years.
In 1986, Phil became owner and President of Aquest Corporation, a successful environmental engineering firm based in Somers, CT. In his spare time, he is the Head Lacrosse Coach at Wilbraham & Monson Academy.
Phil sums up his life this way: “Everything I have was because I received a football scholarship to UMass”.
Phil is married to 1976 UMass graduate Linda. They have three grown sons, Matthew who graduated from Colby where he played varsity lacrosse, Andrew, another Colby grad who played varsity football and Steve, a Springfield College grad who played varsity lacrosse,

ESPN says sources saying the Big East is close the to a TV deal with ESPN. If UMass should get a Big East offer now, or in the future, when the league expands, the media $$ would make a big difference in UMass Sports. Current Big East members may lament the decline in revenue now that the Catholic Seven have left, but it would be a godsend for the Minutemen.

Roger Brown of ESPN Boston says Coach Molnar is making a splash in New England recruiting.
Interesting stuff. If UMass is to succeed at the FBS level, we need to recruit. I am impressed with the level of energy that Coach Molnar and his staff have showed since their arrival. Upwardly impressed.
New England develops enough FBS players so that UMass can have a significant portion of the roster from this area. If you look at the rosters from Coach MacPherson's era, you'll find a large number of the players were from Massachusetts. Many of those players would be considered FBS-level kids today.

South Carolina RB Kenny Miles is a fith-year graduate senior (which means he could play right away for another team) may be on the market to transfer.
Miles led the Gamecocks in rushing in 2009.

Alyssa Creamer and Tom King of MassLive give a balanced presentation about the possible gains and pains from a UMass football upgrade. They do a pretty good job except for the bogus $3 million cost for the program.
One thing I'd like to point out. The one of the biggest gains for UMass football fans would be the added stability for the program.
Going FBS, as the article says (and every study has found) would change UMass' funding; UMass would have a stable source of income that would move the program into into a break even status.
"From all we have looked at, the program [expansion] would be self-supporting in that way, given the new revenue streams we would be generating,'' McCutcheon told Chimelis."
That would be a very good thing considering the on-again-off-again funding from the state.
We lost a Hall-of-Fame coach (MacPherson) when his scholarships were cut. We lost Jimmie Reid (who won the conference championship three of his six years) when his scholarships were cut.
In addition, the break even status would extend to the additional scholarships for UMass' women's programs.
Also, UMass football fans would not have to worry about the long-term viability of the program.
There are certainly some risks involved, and I do not expect the move to generate vast amounts of money after all expenses are paid.
However, there does seem to be the prospect that the program will do more than break even if the potential use of Gillette Stadium for some games comes true.

Friday Follies --- 05/15/09
Don Brown's defense at Maryland kicked the crap out of the Terp's offense in the Spring Game. Brown's squad racked up 8 sacks, 7 PBU, 5 INTs and the first team offense had 8 three-and-outs and zero points. Story here.

Coach MacPherson joins College football Hall-of-Fame
Former UMass, Syracuse and Patriots coach Dick MacPherson has been elected to the College Football Hall-of-Fame.

Congrats to Coach "Mac". He is one of a kind and can tell football stories like few others.
UMass fans will always wonder what would have happened if the UMass administration had allowed him to take UMass into the Big East.

The UMass Friends of Football will hold their premier fund raising event on 06/22/09. The evening meal is usually available separately for those that cannot make the golf classic.
All the current UMass coaches will attend. In the past former UMass coaches such as Bob Pickett, Dick MacPherson (who can really tell football stories) and Mike Hodges have attended.

Signs of Spring!
Well, my backyard is still snow covered here in the Great Granite State. The Madness of March is on basketball. However, for football fans, there are signs of Spring.
The CAA has started its second season of spring practice player Blogs. The player blogs (Delaware, Maine, Richmond, Rhode Island and Northeastern) so far are here . Another article on the CAA spring schedule is here. UMass spring practice starts April 5th!
Meanwhile, JMU had their Pro Day.
I could not figure out why Racheed Rancher was not on NFL draft lists. He's now on the Consensus Draft list.
Former UMass legend Dick MacPherson is again on the College Hall-of-Fame ballot.

6th Annual Friends of Football Golf Classic
The UMass Friends of Football will be holding their 6th annual Golf Classic on Monday July 23, 2007. The event will be held at the Haverhill Country Club.
This is the Friends premier fund raising event of the season. Coach Brown and other UMass coaches will attend.
There will be a dinner and Awards Ceremony after golf followed by a preview of the 2007 season by Coach Brown.
Scheduled to attend are former UMass players, alums and supporters of the UMass program. Also scheduled to attend are former UMass Coaches Dick MacPherson, Bob Pickett, Mark Whipple and Mike Hodges.
I've been to these Classics before. Being able to listen to college football legend Dick MacPherson tell a football story is a privilege. Meeting former coaches Mike Hodges, Bob Pickett and Mark Whipple is great.
Anyone interested in attending (and you can just go to the reception if you want) should contact Joyce Gorman at the UMass Football Office 413-545-2026.
I've said many times on this Blog that all UMass football fans should belong to the Friends. They are the prime movers in supporting the UMass football program. If you want to watch winning football, then join the friends!

UMass History--- 1973 Scans
As related in Monday's post, Ed Hajdusek was kind enough to send us some scans of UMass historical material. The two posts below are scans from 1973. Right Click and Blogger displays a larger view.
In '73 UMass finished 6-5 and 4-2 in the Yankee Conference.
Captains were John Jones and Peil Pennington.
A milestone that year was UMass' 300th win, over Villanova 21-20 on Sept. 15, 1973.
I've blogged before about Dick MacPherson and Bob Pickett, but was not able to get any hits on the assistant coaches. Anyone have any information they wish to share with us?

UMass History 1971
A former UMass player Ed Hajdusek, who played for UMass 1971-'73, was kind enough to send us scans of some UMass historical material.
The following are scans of the 1971 team photo and the 1971 football roster. Right click and Blogger displays a larger view.
1971 was Dick MacPherson's first year as UMass coach. The 1971 UMass squad went 4-4-1 and 3-1-1 in the Yankee Conference. That was UMass' 7th Yankee Conference championship.
Special thanks to Ed for taking the time to provide us with these scans. I don't have any material earlier than 1976.
