Monday--July 6th, 2015

Let's look at 2015's redshirt freshmen. With a year of college-level weight training and working with the staff, some should contribute this year. The redshirts are also the bulk of Whipple's first recruiting class.

QB's

Ross Comis  6-2 205
Andrew Verboys 5-11 200

Austin Whipple was the only reserve QB in 2014 that could play without breaking his redshirt. He didn't look like the future of UMass quarterbacking in his two starts last year. Neither Verboys or Comis looked that impressive in April's Spring Game. Hustle Belt said "Pray for Frohnapfel's health". Still, Whipple pater, will have more options than he did last year.

Defensive backs

Charan Singh 6-2 192
Jerell Addo 6-2 195

Last year depth was a big problem in the defensive backfield. The Minutemen also add  JUCO Jordan Hamilton and transfer Kelton Brackett.

RB

Jordan Fiske 6-3 243

Fiske's size and the fact he played a lot of TE in HS probably means he will be a FB in Whipple's system. Whipple likes FB's who can catch the ball out of the backfield.

TE

Jon Lucier 6-6 220

With Jean Sifrin gone, the Minutemen will be looking for an impact TE.

WR's

Alfred Adarkwah 6-4 195
T.J. Kelley 6-6 215

Both Adarkwah and Kelly have FBS size.

LB's
Joel Devariste 6-1 215
Christian Appia 5-11 225

Devariste is a walk-on. Hudl highlights for Devariste. Hudl has highlights for Appia.

OL

Seamus Murray 6-2 230
Dimitri Angelas 6-5 291
Anthony Fernandez 6-6 302
Dan Dinicola 6-6 290

UMass is fairly deep in offensive linemen. This group probably will not see much action in 2015

DL

Joe Previte 6-3 285
Basit Dennis 6-2 280
Jake Largay 6-6 310
Chris Carter 6-4 276

Defensive line has been the unit hat has been most problematical since our move to FBS. Largay went from 280 last year to 310 this spring. With Dan Maynes and Leo Krizanovic gone, this group could supply a number of slots in the two-deep.

K

Theo Young 5-8 165

Last year's train wreck in kicking probably means the starters are wide open going into summer camp.

Recruiting 2016--JohnCarlo Valentin II

NJ.com image
I've blogged before about JohnCarlo Valentin, a 6-4 345 pound OL from Inhotep HS in PA.

This article from July 2nd by NJ.com updates Valentin's recruiting.

Valentin has multiple offers from Power Five schools.

Saturday--July 4th, 2015

Happy 4th of July everyone. This year is really flying by! Hope there will be some positive fireworks with UMass football this year.

CBS Sports ranks UMass #1 in patriotic mascots! As it should be.

NFL.com rates the most patriotic uniforms, not surprisingly Army and Navy dominate there.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matty Vautour has a story about UAB transfer Kelton Brackett. Minutemen fans hope he has a redeeming senior season. Having his team and teammates pulled out from under him could not have been easy.

The UMass defense has not had the recruiting number that have been afforded the offense so far during our FBS journey. For the first time, the defense receives two potential starters, Kelton and JUCO Jordan Hamilton. The UMass defense has gotten incrementally better each year and could make a significant stride this year with seven seniors in the two-deep.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phil Steele considers more stats this time with percentage of plays by whether a team was losing, tied or winning. The Minutemen were fairly well represented by plays when tied, given the number of close games they were in.

Bob McGovern, writing in the Maroon Musket says J.T. Blyden is no longer with the team.

That leaves Jamal Wilson RSSR 5-9 209 who started three games last year, Lorenzo Woodley JR, 6-1 212 who was the second leading rusher last year and Shadrach Abrokwah JR 5-9 202 as the returning running backs.

The Minutemen will also have two true freshman RB's:

Marquis Young 5-11 200
Sekai Linsey 5-9 210

UMass website
The UMass website has a feature, images and video from the Minutemen Strongman competition I blogged about a couple of days ago.

If you don't lift the competition UMass DT Robert Kitching won is called "Farmers Walk". Besides the weight (250 pounds in Kitching's case) the barbell tends to want to twist. It creates a massive amount of work for your forearms and the rest of your body.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to RotoWorld, UMass OL Tyrell Smith is a potential NFL draft pick. In the NFL, the LT is usually the highest paid player on the team. Good protection on the QB's blind side (if he's right handed) makes the offense work.

The Minutemen were tied for 9th, in the MAC in sacks against, but UMass played four Power Five teams. Eleven of the team's 28 sacks came against Colorado, Vanderbilt, BC and Penn State. Only Eastern Michigan had more pass attempts than the Minutemen in 2014.
