Stats from Phil Steele's magazine:

Bad

UMass led the nation with five close losses. However 85.9% of teams with four or more close losses improved their record the next year.

The Minutemen were #120 out of 128 FBS teams in Steele's Special teams ranking. Lots of MAC company for UMass as Central Michigan was ranked #116, Eastern Michigan #118, Buffalo #119.

The Minutemen were also #120 in Sacks By with a meager 1.25 sacks/game.

Good

After two years of offensive futility, UMass was #56 in yards per play at 5.75, which was ahead of some traditional offensive powers such as BYU, Houston, Kentucky, Louisville and Oklahoma State.

The Minutemen were #49 in sacks per pass attempt with 5.4%, which again is pretty good, considering opponents knew UMass couldn't run the ball.
