UMass Football News -- Isaiah Rogers drafted by the Colts

I haven't been doing blog posts on Sunday during the off season, but I'll make an exception for Rogers.

The UMass website has Isaiah Rogers selected by the Indianapolis Colts.

Mike Traini reports Isaiah Rogers drafted by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft.

Colts Wire has three things to know about Rogers.

Stampede Blue says Isaiah was the 211th pick of the draft.

The Indianapolis Star report the Colts traded former 2nd round pick Quincy Wilson and used the pick to choose Rogers.

Full Press Coverage says Rogers will add depth to Colts secondary and special teams.

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.

 --Calvin Coolidge

Congrats to Isaiah! He did not quit on himself or UMass. I look forward to following his career with the Colts.

UMass Football News--October 23ed, 2019

Josh Walfish reports UMass has been focusing on getting healthy during the off week . He says DL Wilson Frederic, LB Tyrus Lebeau and CB Donte Lindsey should be available. Josh also reports Isaiah Rogers is on the mend.

Tyrus Lebeau was a starter coming out of camp and he should be a big help to the Minutmen's beleaguered linebacking corps. Josh also reports all three QB's should be available if needed.

There had been no word on Isaiah Rogers injury so it's good he's doing well even if he's not 100%. A season ending injury would be a big loss for him and us.

UMass Football News--December 1st, 2019

Isaiah Rogers ------ if you want to make your stomach lurch, try contemplating this season if Coach Bell had not convinced Rogers and Bilal Ally to return this year.

Rogers is a warrior. He did not quit. In several games, his returns were literally the only offense we had.

Rogers had 42 TT, 3.0 TFL, 1 FF, 4 INTS, 10 BRKU and just for icing on the cake 1 blocked kick.

Thanks for all his work and let's hope he has a career in the pros.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matty Vautour has a post on UMass football struggles. He reports some of the roster turnover was due to the A.D. not from Coach Bell.

UMass Football News--March 26th, 2020

Former UMass broadcaster Josh Maurer may have had the Coronavirus, but was unable to get tested.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Isaiah Rogers killed it during his Pro Day. As a DB he went 12-12 GP-GS 23 UT 12 AT 42 TT 3-10 TFL and 4-58 INT.

In punt returns Rogers went 11-120 42 LONG.

In kickoff returns, he totaled 53-1295 24.4 AVE 87 long.

He led FBS in total kick return yards by a wide margin. He was 26th in yards per return.

None of the NFL draft pundits have reacted to Rogers' Pro Day numbers. Any team picking him is going to get a bargain .

Bleacher Report image

Tajae Sharpe joins the Vikings.

Vikings press release on signing Sharpe.

Sports Illustrated has a good article on Sharpe. From the article:

"Sharpe, however, made good use of the opportunities he got in his final season with Tennessee.

He played fewer than half the snaps on offense for the first time in his career but finished second on the team with four touchdown receptions. He was one of two Titans wide receivers (Adam Humphries was the other) with a catch percentage that exceeded 70 percent (a career-high 71.4 percent). Also, 20 of his 25 receptions (80 percent) resulted in first downs."

Sharpe didn't get targeted a lot at Tennessee. When he was, he did good. Sharpe's 2019 highlights.

With UMass not playing, news has been really thin. Local sports media, with the exception of Mike Traini of "Fight Massachusetts" (Mike is becoming the de facto UMass beat reporter) have not been producing any articles to link to.

Hampshire Gazette image
Really nice story about Isaiah Rogers by Joey Alimerti of the UMass Daily Collegian.

Mike Moran of the Gazette also has a story about Rogers and the NFL draft.

I certainly hope Rogers gets his chance to show what he can do. The CFL is another possibility. With his speed and that big Canadian field, he could be a good fit there.

Another possibility is coaching. With his positive attitude and perseverance he could help a lot of younger guys.

This article talks about Georgia's future schedules and the rising price of scheduling Group-of-Five teams including UMass.

Quote from the article:

We’re all fighting for the same pool of teams,” McGarity said. “Auburn does not want to go play UMass in Boston. You’ve got to basically go pay teams to come play you. They’re sitting in a good seat right now, the Group of Five schools. They are able to kind of dictate the market."

It looks like the Independent Minutemen will continue to be in demand for money games. There are a number of negatives be an Independent, but it appears UMass will have no problem making good money on away games.

UMass Football News--July 3rd, 2017

Appalachian State and South Florida get "favorable" schedules in 2017 based difficulty including playing weaker opponents like UMass.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This article mentions QB Jaret Pallotta verbaling to UMass and also mentions the state of Ohio averages 140 FBS recruits a year.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The latest version of the UMass roster lists five CB's (stats are from 2016):

Jordin Hamilton 20 CB 5-10 172 RSSO 5-1 GP-GS 5 UT 3 AT 8 TT 2.0 TFL 1 PD
Lee Moses 3 CB 5-11 193 JR 11-9 GP-GS 25 UT 19 AT 44 TT 0.5 TFL
Jackson Porter 28 CB 6-1 197 RSSR 10-9 GP-GS
Isaiah Rodgers 9 CB 5-10 155 SO 11-8 GP-GS 21 UT 17 AT 40 TT 0.5 TFL 9 PD 1 FF 1 FR 1 BLK
Charan Singh 24 CB 6-1 RSJR 197 9-1 GP-GS 10 UT 18 AT 28 TT
Joseph Tavares 48 CB FR

Lee Moses and Isaiah Rogers received most of the starts in 2016. James Allen started the first four games of 2016, but had trouble with larger, more physical receivers. He left the program this winter.

Rogers was a two-star recruit in 2016 and did not redshirt. Bakhari Goodson, another two-star 2016 recruit, is now listed as a safety.

The Minutemen add three-star CB Brian Roberts, three-star CB Chris Hunt and two-star Xavier Steele in the 2017 recruiting class. At least one of those three probably won't redshirt.

UMass was #126 out of 128 teams in INT's last year. The Minutemen were also #106 in passing yards allowed. Part of that was the quality of the 2016 opponents, but we need to do better in 2017.

The defensive roster is slowly filling up with three-star recruits and UMass should be more competitive in the future.

UMass Football News--September 19th, 2019

Mike Traini of "Fight Massachusetts" recaps the Charlotte game.

Mike mentions UMass CB Isaiah Rogers as a bright spot on the Minutemen defense. Rogers is #9 in the nation in punt returns after three games, averaging 17.8 yards per punt.

He's #18 in kickoff returns averaging 27.7 yards/kickoff.

UMass is #123 out of 130 teams in passing efficiency. The Minutemen are #126 in rushing defense 267.0 yards/game. UMass is #88 in rushing offense with 147.0 yards/game. NCAA stats here.

UMass Football News-- December 6th, 2019

I watched the NJAA Championship Game last night. Links to the box score, photos and more here.

Robert Kennedy, a 5-10 180 CB had a good game for Lackawanna. He had 5 TT and 2 BKUP's . I've blogged about Kennedy before. The game featured defense and the two teams had over 20 total TFL.

The 247Sports UMass Pennsylvania prospects lists only Kennedy from Lackawanna. The Minutemen do not appear to be recruiting anyone from Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Another write-up on the game here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pro Football Focus has Isaiah Rogers as First Team All-American. It was a treat watching him run back kicks this year.

Rogers was also picked All-New England.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inside Athletics has a interview with UMass A.D. Ryan Bamford. He relates the UMass brain trust wants to build the football program with four-year recruits. He feels retraining recruiting classes is critical to Minutemen future success.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I read a 247Sports article (and I can't find it again) that related over 1,900 college football players have entered the transfer portal over the the last 12 months. That's a fairly mind-boggling average of over 14 players per FBS program. That would be a projected loss of 58 players per team over a four year period.

This could be the start of a new era in college football if this level of turnover continues. Rebuilding UConn just lost eight players to the portal.

Keeping players may replace recruiting players as the critical dynamic in team building.

UMass Football News--September 5th, 2018

OK, let's stop with the wailing and gnashing of teeth. We were not the only team to take it on the  chin last Saturday. UConn was crushed by USF 56-17. Fellow Independent New Mexico State, which was claiming they were back, managed only seven first downs and -9 yards rushing against Wyoming. Temple lost to Vilanova, which is a good FCS team. East Carolina lost to North Carolina A&T, which is not.

UMass has some things they can correct. It was a bad call to go fourth-and-one so early in the game. Ford, running left, threw across his body for an INT. Ally fumbled the ball inside the ten. That's 21 points right there. When BC threw over the top, there was usually no white shirt even in the picture. We can do better.

If we'd played heroically and lost 48-49 we'd still be 1-1. The Minutemen need to shake it off and beat Georgia Southern. Starting the season 2-1 would be huge. If you missed it, Georgia Southern had the Sun Belt's 2nd ranked recruiting class. We need to get 'em this year 'cause they're going to be good in the future.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Josh Walfish reports Bakhari Goodson is stepping up with Isaiah Rogers suspended. He also states Rogers is expected back for Georgia Southern.

Josh also mentions the play of Ross Comis. Maybe it's just me, but Andrew Ford has looked a little tentative so far in 2018. I think if a QB leads the team to a score, he should get the next series.
