This article by Mike Blaudschun of the Globe talks about the future of the Big East.
He says something I've been saying here for three years:

UConn coach Jim Calhoun foresees the split coming sooner rather than later, which would leave the Big East with an eight-team basketball league of Marquette, DePaul, Seton Hall, Villanova, Georgetown, St. John’s, Providence and perhaps Notre Dame and a football branch of UConn, Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Syracuse, Rutgers, TCU, and, for the sake of argument, Central Florida."
He goes on to speculate that the Big East would add two teams. I don't think Army or Navy would join. Army tried that with CUSA. The service academies need to be able to tailor their schedules to have some teams they can beat.
I think two teams would be a good fit. One is a state school in the east in a big media market...
The other is Notre Dame. Changing circumstances in college football and the collapse of Catholic identity have reduced the Irish to just another (good) football team. The days of Notre Dame being the 600 pound gorilla of college football are over.

The Nashua Telegraph says the recent changes in the CAA have put UNH athletics in a tought spot.
Some quotes from the article:
"Scarano says it costs, on average, between $35-40,000 to take his team and staff, about 90 people, to a road game in a Mid-Atlantic state, where much of the current CAA schools are based. But costs continue to rise with the price of air fares."

Temple, our erstwhile "rival" in the MAC East had a good day in the NFL draft as the Owls had picks in the first and second round. Boston College had one and UConn none.

The Colts picked Villanova's Ben Ijalana as the first FCS pick.

From the Big East statement":
“The Big East Conference and Villanova University have worked closely with each other over the past several months regarding potential football membership," Marinatto said in the statement. "We will continue with our due diligence process and work with Villanova to continue to share relevant information and materials. The Big East Conference obviously very much values its long-standing relationship with Villanova and we are committed to continuing to work with them on this matter in an open and forthright manner. Until there is additional information to report, the conference plans no further comment.”
My feeling is that this is a lot like the Arab League supporting the "No Fly Zone" in Libya, confident that China or Russia would veto the motion, and then being flabbergasted when that didn't happen. Apparently, some Big East administrations were surprised when it looked like Villanova was poised to make the move. Those schools then were faced with the prospect of a small Catholic school with a very limited fan base and no stadium joining their BCS league----and didn't like the prospect.
