Recruiting 2017---Chinedu Ogbonna

Scout.com image
Several recruiting services indicate UMass has offered to Chinedu Ogbonna, a 6-2 200 pound OLB from Wheeler HS in Georgia.

247Sports page here.

Hudl.com has video.

Partial quote from a February 2016 article about Ogbonna from Scout.com:

Ogbonna, 6'3, 210, has a nice frame and as he adds weight will be a head hunter in his senior season.  With great insticts to the ball and good quickness, Ogbonna already brings a lot to the table.
He's still got a very long time before he will make his deicision, and for now he just plans to keep working and getting ready for his senior season.

"I've been lifting weights and trying to get stronger," he said.
"I run track and mostly just focus on school.  I have a lot in front of me and I'm excited about the future."

Ogbonna has 11 total offers including future UMass opponents Troy, Old Dominion, Tulane (2016) and Tennessee (2017).

Recruiting 2017--Chinedu Ogmonna II

247 Sports image
Back on April 11, 2016 I blogged about Chinedu Ogbonna, a 6-2 200 pound OLB from Wheeler HS in GA.

Michael Traini has a post on Ogbonna and updates his recruiting.

Ogbonna holds 15 offers, including two from Power Five schools Minnesota and Indiana. UMass is his only offer from the Northeast.

UMass Football News--December 5th, 2017

Matty Vautour has an article about UMass football having an interesting off season.

He mentions the possibility that UMass defensive coordinator Ed Pinkham could get an offer from another staff. While UMass could not match a Power Five offer, the Minutemen currently do not have a "assistant head coach". UMass could offer him a raise or extension and the assistant head coach title. I would hope UMass could keep him. The two best wins of 2017, and they were the two best wins of the program in the FBS era, were Appalachian State and BYU. Both games were defensive gems.

Matty mentions the Minutemen will have six QB's on the roster if no one leaves. Andrew Ford has already said he's staying. Ross Comis, Randall West and JUCO Mike Curtis are currently on the roster. UMass adds Jake Pallotta and Josiah Johnson.

Matty says Whipple stated he's received some feelers about grad transfers and is looking at some JUCO's on defense and punter.

He mentions possible breakout players for 2018. Jordan Fredericks joins the running backs.

Chinedu Ogbonna and Jake Byczko will be available for the defensive line. Ogbonna played in eleven games in 2017 and Byczko in twelve. Byczko had 23 TT and three TFL. Ogbonna had 10 TT.

At linebacker, Mike Ruane and Cole McCubrey will complete for playing time. McCubrey had 14 TT and appeared in eleven games. Ruane appeared in ten and had one tackle.

Claudin Cherulis, Xavier Steele and Tyrus Lebeau will be available at Safety. Steele appeared in seven games and five TT. Cherulus and Lebeau redshirted.

Chris Hunt and Brian Roberts will join the cornerbacks.

Brian Abosi joins the offensive line.

Zak Simon, Silky Brown and Melvin Hill will join the receiving corps.

UMass Football News--September 12th, 2019

Josh Walfish reports UMass BUCK linebacker Shannon Junior II has quit the team. Junior's UMass bio.

The UMass two-deep has Chinedu Ogbonna as the backup. Ogbonna was a starter last year and I think he'll do well for the rest of the season. Junior's leaving does make the unit (linebackers) even more shallow than it was.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Josh also has a post on true freshmen DL's Wilson Frederic and Billy Wooden. Frederic and Wooden's UMass bios. There's an old coaching saw that says you lose one game for every true freshman you start.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Outside of Joe Previte, the Minutemen returns only one career start for the rest of the available defensive linemen. Will UMass stick with the 4-3 or move to the 3-4? There are also not a lot of career starts available in the linebackers except for Bryton Barr and Jarell Addo.

Returning are:

Bryton Barr SRGR 12-12 GP-GS 45 AT 50 UT 105 TT 9-42 TFL 5 SACKS 1 INT 1 FF.

If the Minutemen start Addo, Barr and Ogbonna the UMass LB's will be 6-1 200, 6-0 225 and 6-2 215 respectively.

Boston College's reported starters will be Connor Strachan 6-0 240, John Lamont 6-0 240 and Davon James 5-11 230.

The Minutemen do not have a lot of size in the linebacker corps. They also could move  Leon Flanagan 6-2 220 to LB.

UMass Football News--August 14th, 2017

Matty Vautour has a post on Saturday's scrimmage and an update on Fall camp.

Players Matty reports will likely not redshirt include JUCO transfer 6-0 215 pound safety Tyler Hayes. Also on defense, Chinedu Ogbonna, a 6-2 215 pound LB from Marietta, GA. I've blogged about Ogbonna a couple of times before. Another safety is Tyris Lebeau, 6-1 210 from Vanier College in Canada.

On offense, 6-4 JUCO Jacoby Herring and Jesse Britt, 5-10 205 from Lake Alfred, FL will likely contribute right away. I blogged about Britt yesterday.

UMass Football News--February 9th, 2019

Coach Bell also said at the UMass Signing Day event that the Minutemen would play a base 3-4 defense plus "situational". I have no idea how the coaching staff will populate the three-four. My guess would be Isaiah Rogers will start at one corner and the other 10 positions are up for grabs. Maybe Chinedu Ogbonna and Penn State transfer Jarvis Miller at OLB and Cole McCubrey and Mike Ruane at ILB?

Bell also mentioned 2019 recruit Xavier Gonsalves could play LB in some situations. Since UMass had zero pass rush in 2018, I would think we will see a lot of LB blitzes this year.

UMass Football News---August 17th, 2017

Mark Chiarelli of Mass Live report both Ross Comis and Andrew Ford will see action against Hawaii.

Matty Vautour also has a post on both QB's playing.

Matty also reports a number of players have played well in training camp and should see increased playing time this fall.

The offensive line was somewhat of a concern in the Spring. Several writers thought UMass might bring in a JUCO to increase depth.

Whipple indicated three new offensive linemen might be in the rotation:

Larnel Coleman 6-7 300 Redshirt Freshman.

Jaylen Larry 6-3 275 True Freshman. Pre-Med major.

James Reilly 6-3 290 Redshirt Freshman.

On defense:

Charlie Timite DL 6-3 275 Redshirt Freshman.

Chinedu Ogbonna LB 6-2 215 True Freshman.

Zeke Edmonds S 6-0 220 Redshirt Junior. Medical redshirt in 2016.
