Tajae Sharpe joins the Vikings.

Vikings press release on signing Sharpe.

Sports Illustrated has a good article on Sharpe. From the article:

"Sharpe, however, made good use of the opportunities he got in his final season with Tennessee.

He played fewer than half the snaps on offense for the first time in his career but finished second on the team with four touchdown receptions. He was one of two Titans wide receivers (Adam Humphries was the other) with a catch percentage that exceeded 70 percent (a career-high 71.4 percent). Also, 20 of his 25 receptions (80 percent) resulted in first downs."

Sharpe didn't get targeted a lot at Tennessee. When he was, he did good. Sharpe's 2019 highlights.

Winter sports athletes who need surgery haven't had them. In addition, football players, who strength train are going to have a difficult time replacing workouts as gyms are closed.

As Bamford said hopefully the NCAA will allow either a late Spring practice or an enlarged Summer training period. That's assuming there is any Fall sports at all.

UMass Football News--March 19th, 2020

Yesterday I linked to Josh Walfish's article on the possible fallout of the cancellation of Spring football for the rebuilding UMass program.

Some of the difficulty is/was the state of the UMass roster. It's sobering to view the 247Sports scholarship distribution page for the Minutemen.  UMass has 1 (count 'em 1) scholarship senior and 9 juniors on the Spring roster.

Last year the fans hated the UMass hurry-up (because it wasn't working). A run-based grind it out offense would have been better, but the Minutemen only had one recruited RB on the roster. Bilal Ally won UMass' only victory with nine straight carries in the fourth quarter against Akron.

Ally left the Minutemen via the transfer portal. This, I don't understand. He was the feature back last year and surely would have been the feature back again this year.

Probably the biggest glich in the 2019 offense was QB. We did not have one. Randall West gave UMass fans 20 minutes of ecstasy  against Rutgers then got flushed out of the pocket and came up limping and had to leave the game. I thought he never looked the same.

Bad QB play screws up the whole offense. We did recruit JUCO pro-style QB Kyle Lindquist. He's probably the starter unless he arrives injured. UMass also added three-star true freshman Will Koch.

The running back situation in Amherst is still not good. The Minutemen added three-star RB Earl Merriweather, who will likely be the feature back. UMass also added three-star Jared Cole. The problem is depth. Two recruited RB's is not deep even for Group-of-five teams. Temple, for example, has four three-stars.

Offensive line was another problem last year. When I visited a practice UMass had about seven or eight OL on the field. They struggled keep five healthy offensive lineman. The current roster has zero senior linemen and only one junior (!). The staff has done a good job in recruiting and things should improve. I would speculate a OL of Dalton Tomlison and Larnel Coleman at OT, Max Sullivan and Xavier Graham at guard; Jaylen Larry at center.

Another problem is TE. The Minutemen recruited Jacob Orlando and Jackson Manning. UMass did not have a pass catching TE on the roster last year.

What does all this add up to? However we slice it, the UMass offense will be really young and not have a lot of experience playing together. Pro-style offenses usually feature a stud WR like Andy Isabella. Wide receiver is probably the deepest position of the squad and the coaches will want use them.

The spread offense probably best fits the available players. There are a number of "power" spread offense schemes to utilize the running game. UMass could ditch the no-huddle-hurry-up, which would please the fans. The main goals for 2020 could be:
  1. A QB who is not an offensive liability
  2. Better run blocking and a more effective run game.
  3. A lot more production from the WR's.
Hopefully, the NCAA will allow some kind of extended Spring practice to allow UMass to work on all this.

UMass Football News--March 18th, 2020

Josh Walfish has a post on how the cancellation of Spring football will impact the UMass program. Josh says Minutemen A.D. Ryan Bamford hinted at changes to UMass' offense and defensive schemes.

IMHO, one change in 2020 could be a shift to a four-three defense. UMass recruited six defensive linemen.

Viczaril Alobwade 6-5 230
Josh Atwood 6-2 350
Aaron Beckwith 6-4 270
Taishan Holmes 6-3 335 JUCO
Hugo Klages 6-3 235
Sammy Solomon 6-3 300

That's more defense line talent than UMass has seen in maybe, ever. In addition, UMass will have sophomores Billy Wooden, Johnathon Weir, Wilson Frederic and Cletus Mathurin all who played a lot in 2019.

Except for Alobwade, who is, I think somewhat of a project, the rest of the DL's will not redshirt unless injured. At this time, UMass seems to have more bodies and talent at DL than linebacker.

The Minutemen did recruit four linebackers:

Gerrell Johnson 6-3 200
Abdul Kone 6-3 200
Nahji Logan 6-3 215
Miles Turner 6-3 215

Again, this is a lot more talent than we've seen over the last three recruiting classes. All Four are three-star recruits. These four could be core of a bright future. It'll be interesting to see the linebacker two-deep by the end of the year.

Still, I would want Beckwith and Solomon on the field. I'd play  Solomon and Beckwith at DE and Holmes and Atwood at DT. Klages would be my rush package.

Tomorrow, I'll speculate on changes to the UMass offense.

UMass Football News--March 3rd, 2020

Sports writer Pete Thamel reports former UMass coach Jimmie Reid may rejoin the Minutemen as a defensive analyst.

This would be good news for the UMass program. Reid spent 15 years in Amherst as a defensive assistant and then as head coach from 1986-1991. He went 36-29 as a head coach an won three Yankee Conference titles. He was Yankee Conference Coach-of-the-Year twice. Reid did not have a lot to work with during his tenure at UMass. He usually had around 50 scholarships instead of the FCS limit of 63.

Reid is very popular with the football player alumni and with the Massachusetts high school coaching fraternity. He recently was defensive coordinator for a Power Five school. He should help a young UMass staff and also aid recruiting in Massachusetts. Reid's Boston College bio.

UMass Historical Scans---1991

First off I fixed the link to the UMass historical scans. Clicking on the Tangerine Bowl image should take you to Google album with the scans. Then clicking on an image in Google photos should display the full-rez image making the print readable.

Google keeps making changes to their Google albums without any notification. After Google decommissioned Picassa, they went to Google Photos and they don't really seem very interested in it. The same could be said for Blogger. It's a very old platform. You remember when I would post polls? I was going to do a poll this Spring asking how many games UMass everyone thought UMass would win this year and found Blogger no longer supports polls. Nobody blogs anymore.

I've been thinking about moving the blog to another platform, but I haven't been able to pull the trigger.

Let me know if the link does not work. Google automatically signs me in because I'm the blog administrator, so it may respond differently to me than to someone visiting the blog. On thing I have not been able to do so far is add a visible information tag such as "1991" to the images.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday I added 27 images from my collection of UMass 1991 game programs and the 1991 UMass Football press guide. I also added one image of the first page of one edition of the UMass Touchdown Club (the football booster club) edited by Gerry Grady. Include are the covers from three away games (Maine, Northeastern and James Madison).

The 1991 team had Jimmie Reid as HC, Mike Hodges, Doug Berry and Joe Cullen as assistant coaches.

Among the players were Ben Albert, Jerome Bledsoe,Rich Cavanaugh, Rich Kane, Mario Perry, Ron Villone and Vaughn Williams and many more. The "Incoming Freshman" page has Rene Ingoglia and Jason Tudryn.

Lots of UMass football history in 1991. UMass finished 4-7 in '91 and 3-5 in the Yankee Conference. 1991 was the last year Jimmie Reid was head coach.

I think this link will jump you directly to the new images. Let me know if it doesn't work. Blogger's "preview" function no longer creates functional links, so I can't check before publishing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Click on the image and Blogger displays a larger view.
