Well six Buffs fans on the results pool got it right as Colorado beat UMass by 21+.
The Minutemen looked like a team playing their first game. Frohnapfel looked rusty after not playing since early last November. We fumbled the ball after our best run of the first half. Our punter took a knee, which was the same as a blocked punt. We dropped some passes in the first quarter when the game was still competitive.
But most of all, our front seven on defense just got obliterated. Even if we had played better on offense, we weren't going to win that game. It's a fine line on coaching. You don't want to leave your team on the practice field, but UMass needs to run some tackling drills this week.
So the Minutemen have to be resilient. Penn State buried the game tape after the Temple loss. It's another game week starting tomorrow.
BTW, thanks to the Buffs for being gentlemen as they took a 4th-and-long instead of kicking a field goal that would have pushed the score into the 50's.

Game Day--Colorado September 12th, 2015
Another season of UMass football starts today. My 39th consecutive year with season tickets. It's really been great being a Minutemen fan and running the blog. It's been fun interacting with the UMass fans, former players and the school. Sometimes you've got to appreciated what you have.
What we have is a lot of progress. I'm seriously hoping we upset a PAC-12 in their home stadium today. How great is that?
In 2014 our offense could compete with anybody on our schedule. That in itself was amazin'. Last year we didn't have the running game and that is half of Whipple's offense. The Minutemen did not have an FBS-class defense and special teams were well, problematic.
Today we'll the see the results of Whipple's second year of reconstruction. I'm excited. Today is the 5,598th post for the UMass Football Blog. What I'm saying today is what I always say:

Well, everyone knows that playing a PAC-12 team on the road in mile-high Boulder is a tough row to hoe. I think it's good to reflect on how far we've come in two years. UMass fans are actually talking about beating the Buffs, and we really have the team to do it. That in itself is a big step.
It's also worth while commenting on who has the best strength of schedule in New England in week #2 of the season. BC is playing its second FCS game in a row. Howard gave up 668 yards of offense against Appalachian State last week. UConn defeated an FCS team in week #1 and this Saturday plays Army, who was beaten by Fordham last week.
So win or lose tomorrow, UMass vs Colorado is the biggest game for New England teams so far this season :)

The "Who will be the lead UMass running back?" poll closed yesterday with 80 votes.
Lorenzo Woodley 28 votes 35%

The results pretty much match the travel squad to Colorado as announced by Coach Whipple. Nobody has seen the two freshmen run, and that probably accounts for their totals.
Hawaii only managed 100 yards rushing against the Buffs on Thursday. Let's hope the UMass rushing squad sets the tone for the 2015 season with a good effort next Saturday.

I watched Western Michigan hang with Michigan State last night 24-37. The Broncos trailed most of the game did a very credible job hanging with the Spartans.
The MAC had another lightning delayed game with Kent State-Illinois. Unlike the Toledo-Stony Brook game, this one will be made up today.

Exactly what makes the decision "questionable" other than the Gazette staff seems to have a presumption of guilt?Since the Dean of Students declined any further actions against Downey, it would seem Downey will stay a Minuteman unless the court finds him guilty.

I checked on Wagner, our FCS opponent in 2016, in Phil Steele's FCS magazine. Phil has the Seahawks as #63 in 128 FCS teams in 2015. They're ranked ahead of Colgate, Holy Cross, Rhode Island and Central Conn. State, who've we have played in the past. In 2014 Wagner played Florida International and lost 3-24. This year they play two FBS games: Rice and BYU.

Ross Comis 64 votes 71%
Austin Whipple 15 votes 16.6%
Randall West 7 votes 7.7%
James Sosinski 4 votes 4%
I haven't seen Comis in a game situation, but it seems he is playing well in camp. Things would have to get really bad to play true freshman Sosinski and break his redshirt.
