#70 Anthony Dima
Anthony Dima has been named to the Outland Award Watch List.

MassLive has a post on Dima.

Phil Steele has the national Outland Award Watch list.

In Pro Football, the highest paid player is usually not the fan favorite quarterback. It's the left tackle, who keeps him upright.

UMass has a long history of excellent offensive lines. Hopefully Anthony can lead the 2013 Minutemen offensive line back to being a team strength.

Former UMass WR Tom Gilson has been named the Professional Indoor Football League's Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Recruiting 2014--Jamauri Bogan II

I've blogged about Jamauri Bogan, a 5-6 164 pound RB from Union HS in New Jersey before.

He verbaled to Western Michigan yesterday.

Chose Western Michigan over Georgia Tech, UMass, Temple, Toledo and Old Dominion.

UMass expands its effort to promote ticket games and the football team in general. As a season Ticket holder, I just e-mailed the Ticket Office for my two free away game tickets.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last year, the Minutemen's best game at Gillette was their effort against Ohio. The difference was Bobcat RB Beau Blankenship. Athens Ohio Today has an article featuring Blankenship.

He had 269 yards against UMass and went 312-1604 5.1 AVE 15 TD 58 LONG 123.4 YDS/GAME for the year.

He's been named to the Maxwell Award Watch List.

Recruiting 2014 -- Darius Slade II

I've blogged about Darius Slade, a 6-4 22o pound DE from Monclair, NJ before.

This article from NJ.com updates his recruiting.

With Rutgers 2014 class nearly complete, maybe UMass will face reduced competition for New Jersey players.

You can all return to your lives as Victor Cruz has signed his contract with the Giants.

An ESPN writer says the Big Ten's decision to stop playing FCS teams may lead to better guarantees for non-BCS league teams.

Relevant quote from the article:"Schools in non-power leagues like the Sun Belt and the MAC will likely see handsome benefits as bidding wars break out for their appearances on schedules."

UMass' moving to the MAC was the right thing to do. FCS football, which was always a money losing proposition, will have even more problems as the main source of funding dries up.

Recruiting 2014-- Mark Ellis II

I've blogged about Mark Ellis, a 5-8 170 pound DB before.

This post from a Villanova blog has video of Ellis performing DB drills at a Wildcat summer camp. Ellis attended a camp at UMass back in June.

Ellis is drawing interest from Temple, Rugers, Maryland, Boston College and West Virginia in FBS.

Three bowl games in Orlando? It's possible.

Back in June SB nation published its College football entertainment index. MAC report online comments on the MAC's most entertaining team.

The old football saw "Offense sells the tickets" is probably true. Wining helps too :)

Improving the Minutemen's last-in-the-nation scoring offense is Coach Molnar's highest priority. He's an offensive guy. Last year could not have been any fun for him.

Coach Molnar seems to be able to make changes if needed. Last year, the UMass offensive line was probably the poorest performing/most out matched unit in our first year in FBS. This year we have a new O-line coach, a new offensive coordinator and Coach Molnar says he's going to let Coach Bond do most of the play calling.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Bleacher Report writer has "25 top trios in College Football"". UMass OOC opponent Wisconsin is one, Ball State, Ohio and Toledo are from the MAC.

Speaking of entertaining players, UMass' move to FBS will bring in some opposing players we never would have seen in FCS. Vanderbilt's Jordan Matthews  6-3 205 is Mel Kiper's #1 SR WR for the NFL 2014 Draft.

Matthews is also NFL Draft Scout's #1 WR going into this season.

Minutemen fans will get to see Matthews facing off against UMass' Randall Jette or Trey Dudley-Giles or D'Metrius Williams at Gillette on Setemnber 24th.

UMass Topping Off Ceremony

In a light drizzle, a good turnout of UMass fans celebrated the topping of the Minutemen's Performance Center yesterday.

The UMass website has an article and video here.

Coach Molnar gave a short speech talking about the improvements in UMass football and reiterated his goal to make UMass a good football team quickly.

I set a Picassa web album of the event here.

I asked one of the construction guys about the press box. He said that when it was built back in the 60's, they used some materials that require special disposal handling in this age. Permits to start knocking it down should arrive shortly.

Below are a few images from the album. Click on the image and blogger displays a larger view.

Tuesday--July 2, 2013

Philly.com says J.T. Blyden's verbal happened because UMass wanted him as a TB.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is UMass turning into running back U? With Stacey Bedell already on the roster and Lorenzo Woodley coming in this fall, and now the 2014 verbal of three star RB J.T Blyden, the Minutemen look as if the offensive backfield will be a strength in the coming years. Coach Molnar has said he wants UMass to be one of the top teams in the MAC. The RB position looks like the first Minuteman unit to start to achieve an edge over other league teams.

Blyden's signing is also good news for the Woodley and Bedell, if they have NFL dreams. it's better to be part of a stable of running backs than to be the every down player. If you want to play in the NFL you don't want to leave your body in college. Michael Cox is going to make the Giants because he had low mileage on him and he had some gas in the tank to impress at the Combines and training camp.

This article from 2012 talks about Alabama's running backs. Quote from Nick Saben:" I think of it future wise," he said. "A lot of running backs want to get the ball 20-30 times a game, but at the same time it wears your body down, and you don't really know how long your body will last.".

In addition, UMass will probably be playing a tough OOC schedule for the foreseeable future. Coach Molnar's spread offense will work in the MAC and last year's 511 yards of offense against Ohio showed what the Minutemen's future will look like. However, trying to out quick BCS teams like Kansas State, Wisconsin and Vanderbilt can make things tough for your defense. UMass could use a "BCS game offensive" like we showed in the first Michigan game. Run the ball, control the clock and shorten the game. If UMass can get it's offense line fixed, our new running back corps looks as if we may be able to do that in a couple of years.
