Uplink is working
Well, here we are 500+ miles south of the great Granite State. Looks like I'll be able to bring you some images and news after the game tomorrow, Insha'allah.Not much new stuff on the net. Generally, the I-A people and the Navy Message Board are at picking Navy by 17 to 50 points. The I-AA people (see previous blogs here) are mostly saying UMass has a chance at an upset.
A voice of reason on the I-A side is Adam Nettina. He runs two sites Pitch Right and it's client blog Navy Football Fanhouse.

Well, it must be a road trip! Shortly I'll be leaving for the long drive down to Annapolis, MD for the big UMass-Navy game.
Hopefully, my new wireless card on my laptop will be working and I'll be able to bring you some images and info after the game.
If there is no activity here tonight or Saturday, then I'm having technical difficulties. Check back late Sunday or early Monday morning for lots of new stuff.

UMass Marine Killed in Iraq
While we enjoy a weekend of football, let us not forget those who daily risk their lives to keep us safe.Remember Eric P. Valdepenas, Marine Lance Corporal and 21-year-old UMass engineering student who was killed Monday in Iraq.
Eternal rest grant unto him Oh Lord, and perpetual light shine upon him.

KAEO Former UMass player Lorenzo Perry.
In an earlier blog post, we covered the news former UMass RB Lorenzo Perry, who transferred to Bryant last year was a pre-season All-American this year.
Last week Perry won the New England Gold Helmet award. For non-New England readers the Gold Helmet is awarded by the Boston sports writers for the best football performance by a player in any division. Perry's award was the first time any Bryant player had won the award.

Football coaches hate the new time rule
Matt Vautour in the Hampshire Gazette has a story (with quotes from several A10 coaches) about the new rule intended to speed up the game. It worked. Some coaches are saying it will cost 15 to 20 offensive plays per game.
Matt has a link in his blog to a USA Today Article quoting I-A coaches. They don't like it either...

Koegel A10 Special Teams Player-of-the-week
Christian Koegel was named the A10 Special teams Player-of-the-week for his performance against colgate.But we already knew that based on my Sunday Blog. Koegel went: 4 punts 187 yards 46.8 ave 55 long and 1 in20.
Interestingly, UMass had five players named A10 Players-of-the-week in 2005. All return in 2006.

The weather is looking iffy so the new field turf looks like it was a good investment.I'll be leaving soon to make my way down to MA for the game. I hope to have some game images for you by tonight, but it probably will not be until about 8:00pm of so.

UMass-Colgate -- Tale of the tape
As I mentioned in yesterdays blog, the UMass game notes are here .There is a comparison between the UMass-Colgate two deep. Does the chart reveal any insights?
Well the UMass starting OL of Matt Austin, Nick Dana, Alex Miller, David Thompson and Sean Calicco average 6-3 299 pds.
The Colgate OL of Steve Jonas, Zach Posey, Jake Sulovski, Rich Rosabella and Nick Hennessey averages 6-2 271 pds.
The UMass Defense line of Jason Hatchell, Brandon Collier, Jason Leonard and David burris averages 6-2 259.5.
The Colgate defensive line of Ryan Keller, Paul Mancuso, Nick Sabo and Pat Nolan averages 6-2 256.75 pds. Not much difference in DL.
On two-wideout sets, UMass should start Brandon London 6-4 210 and J.J. Moore 6-0 201. Colgate should counter with CB Cody Miller 5-9 186 and CB Chris Elpo 6-1 190
The third UMass Wideout is Rasheed Rancher 6-5 197. Colgate's FS is Andrew Moore 6-0 190.
No real difference in running backs, quarterbacks, linebackers or tight ends.
UMass OL averages about 25 pds more than Colgate's. Our Wide Receivers should have a significant advantage over Colgate's DBs. Other than that, Colgate is very close in physical size to the Minutemen.
