Tuesday-- October 16th, 2012

Matty V. has some updates on the status of injuries and academic suspensions.

Starters possibly out for the Bowling Green game:

Non-starters questionable are:
The missing five starters are a big hit to the Minutemen team. If Casselberry and Speller are out, the UMass offense line will starting two true freshmen, a circumstance that would cause most coaches to blanch and walk away muttering. Blanchflower, Williams and Tharpe have been playing well. The two receivers were a big part of the Minutemen's near upset of Ohio.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plumer also takes a look at defense in the MAC. This week's opponent Bowling Green leads the league is scoring and total yards defense.

Cleveland.com says Bowling Green may be the best team in the MAC East. I have the same feeling. The Falcons are very good. Talent-wise they are probably right there with Western Michigan and will present a significant challenge to UMass.

The Minutemen's MAC schedule will get easier---- but not this week. Hopefully, we will be back to full strength for Saturday.

MAC Report Online says Bowling Green's lines dominated on both sides of the line of scrimmage against Miami (Ohio).

Boston College has a new AD. Football scoop looks at the ramifications for the football staff.

BTW, occasionally people ask me why I like UMass football and UMass athletics in general. I just like the way we play the game and the way things are done.

Boston College just dropped UMass from their hoops schedule. Is it just me, or does it appear that BC and UConn's willingness to play basketball against UMass is an inverse correlation to how well UMass  is doing? The Minutemen's prospects in basketball (possible NCAA bid, most pundits state) wouldn't have any impact on the Eagles decision would it now?

Also, I might point out Coach Molnar grounded five of UMass' top players for academic reasons and the Minutemen took it on the chin at Western Michigan.

UConn's star running back was arrested for beating on his girlfriend and played the next day. McCombs was suspended for one quarter of the Rutgers game.

Harry Plumer talks about the Western Michigan and  the the academic suspensions.

If you want to relive the day, MLive has 59 images from the Western Michigan-UMass game.

Harry awards three helmet stickers for the Western Michigan game. He mentions the fine play of Jordan Broadnax this year. Broadnax did not look all that impressive as a freshman averaging 3.3 yards a carry. However, this year he has really found his stride. He's a force on kick returns with 29-657 22.7 AVE 61 LONG.

SB Nation Boston reviews a bad weekend for New England FBS teams. I watched a replay of the BC-Army team last evening. The visibly bigger Eagles could not contain the smaller, more motivated Army option offense. The BC defense looked slow. They're not happy over at BC Interruption.

Sunday--October 7th, 2012

Prior to the season, Phil Steele (and most other pundits) had Western Michigan as the top team in the MAC West and perhaps the entire MAC. They showed that yesterday. We just got crushed on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Our front seven on defense was not competitive with the Broncos in any manner.

In addition, anything that could go wrong, did go wrong. An eighty-two yard punt. Bob Blanchflower DNP. An inadvertent whistle probably stopped a UMass TD.

UMass had a significant talent gap on both sides of the ball. We have some excellent players, but we need more bodies and speed to run with BCS teams and the top level of the MAC.

Ten of the thirteen verbals listed on on UMass' ESPN recruiting page are offensive linemen, defensive linemen and linebackers. It's no secret what the Minutemen need. We'll just have to keep following the recruiting news and wait for them to get here.

Anyway, we have a week to recover.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matty V. says the Broncos routed the Minutemen. Four key players DNP.

Actually, after reading Matty's article, I feel a little better. I noticed there were a lot of new faces in the UMass lineup. We just don't have the depth to play without our regulars. Kudos to Coach Molnar to have the courage of his convictions about academics. Most people will not look past the score, but APR and education should be a goal of UMass football as well as wins and losses.

Harry Plumer has another story on "the coaches decision".

The South Bend Tribune says Western Michigan ripped UMass.

The Boston Globe says UMass falls flat.

MassLive said UMass took a massive step back.

MLive said Western Michigan ran past UMass 52-14.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Misery loves company dept.

Army, who was held to 3 points by FCS Stony Brook, rang up 516 yards rushing to keep Boston College winless in FBS.

Game Day Western Michigan

Blog reader izy1 has found a free live video MAC streaming site . It's here. Try it before using the pay-for-viewing site I posted yesterday. Thanks to him for pointing this out.

UPDATE: Izy1's link is working for me with Comcast/Mint 13/Chrome. Audio is a little low, but I can live with that.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, UMass has played well the last two games, but does not have a win to show for it. It looks like the Minutemen will be as close to full strength today as they have been all season.

Hopefully, the UMass offense will continue their progress and move the ball effectively. The Minutemen defense will be going against a Bronco offense that is playing their second team QB. Getting some turnovers would help the cause. The weather forecast is 70% chance of showers.

Let's get after the Broncos and get our first FBS and first MAC win.

Go UMass!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matty V has UMass heads to Western Michigan.

MassLive's Harry Plumer says UMass could be rolling into Western Michigan  at just the right time.

UConn figures to have their hands full with 4-0 Rutgers this week.

Clay holds offers from Kent State and UMass in FBS. Delaware, Duquesne, Old Dominion and Towson have offered from FCS.

Friday--October 5th, 2012

Western Michigan is supposedly providing live streaming video for the UMass game. The link is here. Click on the inconspicuous radio button to select the package. Most of these streaming video sites are pretty bare bones. One camera and sometimes no announcer. Those inside UMass' radio envelope could listen on the radio and watch the game at the  same time. MLive.com says the Broncos have "supreme confidence" in backup QB Tyler Van Tubbergen's ability to run Western Michigan's offense.

Western Michigan's web site says the Broncos are looking for their first MAC win.

The Broncos got some bad news about WR Jon Henry's practice field injury. He's out for the season with a torn ACL. Strong Safety Rontavious Atkins and WR Eric Monette and TE Gabe Hughes are also out.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Victorybellrings.com ranks the MAC ahead of Conference USA, WAC, Sun Belt and Mountain West. Relavent quote:"I would argue that this is the best non-AQ conference in the FBS."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One condition of allowing UMass to join the MAC in football is four games between UMass hoops and MAC teams.

I picked up Athlon Sports College Basketball magazine recently. UMass basketball fans will see two MAC teams at home and the Minutemen will play two games on the road

Date-------Team-------- 2011-12 teams record----Athlon Sports ranking in the MAC
