Off Topic rant: Matty Vautour on UMass' soft basketball schedule. If you haven't seen the schedule it's here. The Blog thinks it's time for UMass hoops to improve. It seems like coach Cal has been gone since the last Ice Age. We should be one of the top Atlantic 10 Teams.
Speaking of basketball, one of the Blog's least favorite sports writers Dan Shaughnessy has an essay on how bad a college sports town is Boston. Quote from the article: "Or check with John Calipari and ask him how hard it was to get support in Amherst when he took UMass to the Final Four."
How many consecutive sellouts did Mullins have when UMass Basketball was making its great run during the Calapari years? As I remember it, Shaughnessy and the Boston Globe rarely had anything good to say about UMass sports or UMass basketball in particular.

Defense and ST's did well all day long. Still hoping we find a way to get to the QB more often but overall the defense did really well.
Seemed like the mix of DL's worked well. The LB's played well but would hope that DJ Adeoba would use his speed more to get to either the QB or to the ball.
DB's played well but need to keep the avoidable, unnecessary penalties to a minimum.
As far as the Cross game goes it seems pretty simple. Just look at WmNMary Coach Laycock's post game comments that in effect said "That line is big and we couldn't get off their blocks"
That is the formula for a successful offense. 5 OL's 1 TE and a HB and a FB here and there and we are in good shape. Keeps their defense on their heels. W/ at least 2 good TB's (and one in waiting for sure) we would seem to have fresh legs ready at all times. This is the kind of offensive set up that has done well for a lot of teams. As long as injuries can be avoided this offensive setup looks very promising.
As for this week - UMass uses their very good front 7 and a great ground game towards a win. Defense will have to be ready for a typical HC offense of something like 60+ passes w/ most being anywhere from 1-4 yds.
UMass wins 39-13.
As for some of the comments about our QB well hard to knock him too much. First game of the season. No INT's and though a couple of botched center qb exchanges and at least 1 bad handoff no lost fumbles. If we can get the exchanges down (pretty likely) and make our handoffs we should be fine. I thought the majority of his throws were pretty good. He has been in the fire for a while now and up in the Top Row we do not see any reason to make a change. If the Fr QB is that good maybe red-shirting him is the best idea for everyone involved. Up in the Top Row we still like Hunt to run the team. Do not have a lot of info on Shultis yet.
We do not need any QB controversies.
Weather for Sa appears to be really nice for football.
See you Sat. up in the Top Roww
Jesse Hunt is probably 4th or 5th on the depth chart.(definitely behind Havens Hill and Shultis, not sure between him and Pendegast) there is a reason he didn't get on the roster until AFTER Spencer Whipple left for Miami and why he was still available at that point.

To another very anonymous "blogger" w/ his QB comments.
I based my QB comments on what I saw in the Spring Game and also factoring in opinions who knew of #17 before he came to UMass.
You are - of course - entitled to your opinion but at the same time it might be worthwhile to back up some of what you are saying w/ some constructive opinions.
For what it is worth up in the Top Row we liked what we saw of him and would still feel comfortable w/ him at QB should the situation arise.
Also, at least for now up in the Top Row we have not been able to gather much info that is not common knowledge about #'s 3,7 or 15 so we try and avoid putting our foot in our mouth when we do not have a clue.
And since this is the UMass Football blog try some advice offered by myself and many others who come on here numerous times - if you cannot say something nice do not say anything at all.
See you on Sa up in the Top Row Sec 16.
Only way Hill sees the field is if the teams starts to go downhill. Hill is the piece for Morris to keep his job for next year if needed. If they win no way havens gets pulled. Minus one play he was fine. Its no secret we want to run and run and run. If Havens doesnt throw INT's we can win every week.
Memo to UMASS: this saturdays game will be a sellout, be prepared and keep the students involved while in the stadium, otherwise they may never return. PS I am talking about the sound people, video folks and event staff, the team I know will be prepared. We are hearing of a tremendous student turnout. Go UMASS!!
Nice to see you are already preparin an excuse why the students won't return.
Top Row Sec 16,
Now I didn't post that first anonymous post but I will say. I myself would much rather have a JUCO transfer in Shultis play in any situation over Hunt. Not to knock Hunt or anything. But Shultis has played in a game situation above the high school level. Hunt has not, and you can't qualify the spring game as experience. That is a joke, the spring game isn't even a game. Why do you think no one shows up to it. It's basically a practice in game uniforms.
I myself have been to multiple games and seen Hunt practice live. He is a great kid and good teammate, not a Div 1aa caliber QB though.

Hope to hear from you more often
